Social Media Survey Project (15 percent of final grade)
This project will allow you to utilize the knowledge you’ve gained about survey research to collect data about people’s views on social media. You will create a short survey (up to 10 questions), send out your survey, and then analyze the data you collected.
How should I find people to survey?
My advice is to find people at Vanderbilt that you know (e.g. roommates, friends, etc.) or someone you can send it to outside of Vanderbilt (e.g., family members).
What to turn in:
-A set of research questions and survey items (this can be a word document)
-An excel spreadsheet that contains your raw data from the surveys you collected
A 3-5 page survey data analysis report containing Parts 3 and 4 below
Project Rubric
Part 1: Research Questions and Survey Items (___/20 points)
-Student should submit an introduction that contains the problem at hand, the methods, set of research questions that is informed by the literature and curiosity, and the significance of the project.
-Students submit their survey items that will allow them to gather data that informs their research questions (this includes both demographic items as well as items related to social media and mental health)
-The items follow the practices outlined in Sheppard, Chapter 8.6
Part 2: Survey Data (___/20 points)
-Surveys are collected from at least 10 people (don’t fake your data or use any sort of AI for this). Other people in the class can help but it’s not worth cheating for the 2 points per survey.
Part 3: Survey Analysis (___/40 points)
Tables that contain the following information:
-Response rate
-A univariate analysis of each survey item
-Two bivariate analyses that align with your research questions (see Sheppard, Chapter 9.2 for details) that use a demographic variable and a survey item
-One table that shows the results of a test of conditional means (e.g., a T test) to see if responses are significantly different by a demographic variable. This should align with one of your research questions.
Part 4: Overall Reflection (___/20 points)
-What are your takeaways from conducting this analysis? What information did you gain that helped you answer your research question?
-What would you have changed about your survey items now that you’ve collected your data?
