Learning outcomes assessed

LO3 Critically reflect upon significant structural elements and operational strategies applied by practitioners and organisations in a creative industry or cultural sector.

LO4 Collect, consider and critically evaluate information.

LO5 Work independently to research, plan, synthesise concepts and articulate opinion following appropriate conventions.

Rationale

A detailed case study enables you to apply the understanding and research you have undertaken and to a business consulting context providing a summative assessment for the module. You should draw partially on the database of global businesses and organisations generated in assignment 1 to identify and delve deeper into one specific enterprise. In your case study you will focus on organisational processes and the entrepreneurial skills of key personnel to produce an understanding of the successful aptitudes and strategies required to work in or develop an enterprise in your chosen sector.

Assessment guidance

You will simulate consulting for a cultural organisation or creative venture, giving advice on how to improve or enhance their operations, producing a viable business development plan based on sector analysis and market research. Your strategic consultancy report will:

Identify a small to medium size enterprise in the CCIs, including research into its establishment, leadership and organisation, development history and impact on relevant markets or communities.

Use the business model canvas to explain its operations and identify strengths and weaknesses.

Provide a macro-economic analysis of the relevant sector.

Conduct market research into one specific aspect of the business that you believe could be further developed.

Produce strategic development goals for its organisation over the next 3 years, which may include a rebrand, refresh of marketing materials, new income generating activities and/or structural reconfiguration.

Create recommendations that can be presented to the enterprise’s leadership team and any other potential stakeholders, articulating your project strategy to a non-expert in a clear and concise manner. Clearly identify income streams for the business and the costs associated with creating the products or providing services that are core to the venture’s potential to make a profit or meet its social commitments.

Your report should be well presented including an index of contents, graphical illustrations, imagery and citation of sources.

Where to get help

Lectures will give guidance on completing the assessment and you will be supported in completing the tasks in the workshops where tutors will be able to give you formative feedback on your work. You will also work with your classmates in specialist interest groups (SIGs) to gather data and build your understanding of relevant sectors. You will share the research you do in your SIG on the module page engaging in peer learning through in-person meetings and Microsoft Teams chats.

How to submit your work

You will submit your work via your module page on Minerva. Further guidance on uploading assessments to Minerva can be found here. Please take care when submitting your work to make sure that you are uploading the correct version. Once the deadline for the assessment has passed, you cannot resubmit work.

Presentation and referencing

Presentation

You should follow the assessment guidance to create a business report of approximately 3500 words. You are advised to draw on examples of business and strategic reports linked from the module page and in lectures, but you may be creative with the presentation of your report providing visual examples of research where this communicates the ethos and culture of the enterprise you are providing the report for.

Referencing

The School uses a variation of the Harvard referencing style called Leeds Harvard. To reference in Leeds Harvard:

Insert an in-text citation and a corresponding reference in an alphabetical list at the end of your work for every source you quote, paraphrase, summarise or refer to.

Include the author's surname and year of publication in the citation, and the full details of the item in the reference.

Include page numbers in your citation if you quote directly from the text, paraphrase specific ideas or explanations, or use an image, diagram, table etc from a source.

For more information, please see the Leeds Harvard Referencing Guide

NB. You should provide links to websites of businesses and organisations you refer to. You should reference any shared work produced in your SIG.

Use of artificial intelligence tools in this assessment

AMBER: AI tools can be used in an assistive role

You are permitted to use AI tools for specific defined processes within the assessment.

Appropriate use of GenAI may be for the strategic development of your outline for your report. You may use the Generative AI tool, Microsoft Co-pilot under the University of Leeds commercially protected license for initiating research through the generation of lists, searches for information and creation of design ideas. GenAI can produce inaccurate and false results, all information must be checked using other sources or methods.

Your final report, ideas and information contained within it must be your work. If you have used GenAI in the process it should be clear where this has been used and how you have developed the materials further. Any use of GenAI must be clearly stated in your submission.

In addition, you are still permitted to use artificial intelligence tools in line with the University’s proofreading policy. Further guidance can also be found here.

It is essential that you can distinguish between other people's work and your own, and correctly acknowledge other people's work. By submitting work, you confirm that you have read and understood the University’s definition of Academic Integrity and the University’s rules on Academic Misconduct and are aware that if you commit an academic misconduct offence there can be serious disciplinary consequences.
