A1 Mini-Report: written report totalling 1,000 words. (20%)

*Assessment tasks will test you on what we are studying in the course. You will struggle

to pass if you have not consistently engaged with lectures, tutorials, and readings.

There are two components to this task. The first component is substantially larger than

the second.

Component One. Research, write, and submit a concisely structured report addressing

TWO topics from the course of your choice, from Week 1 to Week 4. This part of the

report should comprise of approx. 850 to 900 words.

For each topic: identify one or two key theme/s, concept/s, argument/s, debate/s,

theory/theories, issue/s, or insight/s that you wish to report on, then discuss and/or

analyse. It is up to you whether you want to provide separate sections for each of the

two topics, or if you wish to combine the two topics into a single write-up.

You are NOT being asked to simply summarise or passively regurgitate content.

What do you think? Why? What’s your conclusion? What are your insights or key

takeaways, based on what you are reporting on? You may want to show you can apply

ideas/theories you are reporting on to succinctly discuss or analyse a contemporary

issue, a case study, an example, or a short news article drawn from this year. You may

also want to make some relevant constructive conceptual connections with other

weekly topics and materials.

Component Two. Write a short reflective statement, addressing the following. What are

some of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer and researcher? What are some

aspects you would like to improve, in terms of refining strengths and/or addressing

weaknesses? List some practical steps you might take towards this, as pertaining to

your own deliberate practice. This part of the report should comprise of approx. 100 to

150 words.

Your reflective statement (Component Two) CANNOT be generic and MUST show a

genuine awareness of your strengths and weaknesses, as manifested in your report

(Component One).

Writing and presentation: clarity and coherence of expression, grammar, punctuation,

sentence construction; professional layout.

Conceptual understanding: ability to demonstrate a genuine understanding of key

issues, concepts, arguments across the course to date, instead of only a shallow

engagement with a very limited range of course material.

Personal voice and insight: ability to coherently develop and articulate your own

perspective and opinions, demonstrating critical and creative thinking, instead of

providing collated, assembled, or superficially glib content.

Research: documentation of, and effective use of, a sufficient range of relevant

research, to properly support your critical and creative thinking.

Referencing: adherence to proper referencing conventions, including provision of

specific page references as necessary.

Reflection: capacity for thoughtful and productive self-reflection, showing a grounded

awareness of your strengths and weaknesses, to inform deliberate practice.
