STAGE 1, UNIT 01:

INTRODUCTION TO CULTURE, CRITICISM AND CURATION

ASSESSMENT BRIEF:

This unit will introduce you to aspects of culture, criticism, and curation. It offers a

starting point from which to engage with a variety of ideas and approaches to curation

and writing. You will explore how to engage with objects, images, place and lived

experience critically and analytically through reflective and critical writing. In addition,

you will test and apply these ideas through hands on experience, real life examples and

group projects. The unit will introduce you to effective learning and studentship at

undergraduate level. It will orientate you to the practices and knowledge base needed to

understand your discipline and help you to develop your skills for independent and

collaborative learning, reflection, and your own self development.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Through this assignment you should aim to demonstrate critical analysis, robust

research, and a creative and ethical approach to cultural production that in combination

respond to the Unit 1 Learning Outcomes.

WRITTEN ELEMENT – DIGITAL PORTFOLIO:

A digital portfolio that reflects all taught aspects of the unit. The submission allows you

to demonstrate a variety of distinct approaches to writing and analysis (see itemised list

below). Each submission has its own specific requirements and an expected wordcount.

At the end of Unit 1 your digital portfolio will include six entries for assessment:

1. Annotated bibliographies on three given texts (1,000 words in total / 330-350

words per text); the academic texts you are responding to have been pre- selected and are available to download from Moodle.

2. An analytical description of an object or image (400 words +/- 10% with images).

3. A content analysis report evidencing a) the quantitative gathering of data and b)

the interpretation of this data (600 words +/- 10%); including a table of findings

(not included in wordcount) and sample images.

4. A piece of observational writing detailing a given place / space (400 words +/-

10% with images).

5. A review of a current exhibition at a Mayfair gallery (field trip) (400 words +/- 10%

with images).

6. A piece of reflective writing on collaboration in curatorial group work, identifying

your own role and contribution (400 words +/- 10% with images).

For submission, you will need to compile the six submission elements into a single

document, add a cover sheet, and export the document into a PDF file.

Please note that each submission has a class designated to it, attendance of these

sessions will help you understand the form of writing in detail. Details can be found on

Moodle. To help manage your workload we advise you to complete each submission

element soon after the corresponding class.
