Explore — Impact of Computing Innovations
Read the entire assignment before you begin.
You will be submitting TWO deliverables as described below.
Learning Objectives:
1. Implement at least 2 tools to create digital artifacts.
2. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using infographics.
3. List types of visualizations that can be included in an infographic.
4. Describe how the size or words in a word cloud are determined.
Overview
In general, computing innovations impact our lives in ways that require considerable study and
reflection for us to fully understand them. A computing innovation is an innovation that includes a
computer or program code as an integral part its functionality. Computing innovations impact our lives
in ways that require considerable study and reflection for us to fully understand them. In this
assignment, you will explore/research a computing innovation that has affected the focus area of the
Rutgers Club that you have been working on in Assignments 1, 2, and 3. You will use the data you
collected in Assignment 2 (Forms). Ask yourself: “What computing innovation has affected an activity
that my club focuses on?”
Your examination of this computing innovation will deepen your understanding of computer science
principles. You must be able to identify the beneficial and possible harmful effects of the computing
innovation. You must be able to explain how the innovation consumes, produces, and/or transforms Modified from Explore PT, College Board

data. And, finally, you must be able identify at least one data storage concern, data privacy concern, or
data security concern directly related to the computing innovation and explain why this is a concern.

Requirements (2 deliverables)
1. (10 points) Create an infographic about your club. Your submitted INFOGRAPHIC is a visual
representation of information about the Rutgers CLUB that you have worked on in Assignments
1, 2, and 3. Your infographic is to provide an illustration/representation of your club’s intended
purpose and information that will be of interest to your intended audience. You are
“recruiting” members! Include in your infographic:
(2 points) A word cloud created from textual information about the innovation. (Create the
word cloud with https://wordart.com/ )
(2 points) At least one chart/graph
Use data from your survey and create a chart or graph of the summary
of your data.
OR
Find data online dealing about the focus of your club and create a chart
or graph from that data.
(2 points) At least one image of the computing innovation you have chosen.
(3 points) Interesting information about your club innovation you have researched
presented in an interesting way.
(1 point) Include references for any visuals you use if you did not create those visuals.
Use Picochart (You may use AI generated Infographics as a base for your infographic)
https://bit.ly/picochart. Keep track of how you are modifying the AI infographic so that it is easy
for you to answer QUESTION 2 below.
Download your completed infographic as a PDF file OR provide a link to your finished
product. The link should be accessible to anyone.
2. You are to RESEARCH how technology has affected the focus of your club. What computing
innovations have had an impact? A computing innovation is a new or improved technology that
uses a computer or computer software to solve problems, perform tasks, or improve how
people interact with the world.
For example:
Biking club: There are MANY computing innovations that have impacted road biking.
These include: GPS and Navigation Systems, Cycling apps like Strava, Zwift, Training
Peaks that analyze your data, heartrate monitors and power meters that collect
biometric data to guide skill building, etc.
Sci-Fi Book club: Devices like Kindle, Nook, tablets, and apps (e.g., Goodreads, Libby,
OverDrive, Apple Books) make it easy to:
Access thousands of sci-fi titles instantly.
Highlight and annotate passages for discussion.
Read across devices, even offline.Modified from Explore PT, College Board

Create and submit a document with responses to prompts given below. Your final submission
of this document should be in pdf format. In order to respond to the prompts, you will
investigate/research your computing innovation using a variety of sources (print or online). In
your responses, you must cite at least one source that helped you formulate answers to the
prompts. CHOOSE ONE computing innovation and answer the FIVE questions below:
Clearly label your responses 1 - 5 in order. Your responses must provide evidence of the
extensive knowledge you have developed about your club’s purpose and the impact of
technology on the functioning of the activity that is the focus of your club. Write your
responses so they would be understandable to someone who is not familiar with the
computing innovation. Include citations, as applicable, within your written responses. Your
response to all prompts combined should not exceed 600 words (about 6 total paragraphs).

Questions Begin Here (10 points) :
Create a Word doc. Include your Name and Section number and Honor statement. Answer the
following questions:
1. (2 points) Provide the following information on your computing innovation.
● Name the computing innovation that you investigated/researched.
● Describe the computing innovation’s intended purpose. (Approximately 100 words)
2. (2 points) Describe your development process in creating your infographic. (Approximately
100 words) Answer in complete sentences.
What software did you use.
Did you use a provided template or AI generated infographic? or start with a blank
infographic. If you used AI, what changes were necessary?
What is the purpose of your infographic? Why did you include the information that you
included?
3. (2 points) Explain at least one beneficial effect and at least one possible harmful effect the
computing innovation has had, or has the potential to have. (Between 100 and 200 words)
4. (3 points) (Approximately 200 words) Using specific details, describe:
(1 point) Does your computing innovation need information to perform it’s intended
task? Does it use locations, personal finance information, images, text, etc.? What data
is necessary for your computing innovation to work?
(1 point) Does your computing innovation use data that is input by the you? Does it
output data for you? Does it transform data?
For example, Google maps takes an address as input, produces an image on a
map as output, and transforms that address to latitude-longitude coordinates
for calculations that you may wish to perform
(1 point) Give at least one data storage concern, data privacy concern, or data security
concern directly related to the computing innovation.Modified from Explore PT, College Board

Note: Explain WHY this is a concern. You should be specific about what type of
data or security is being threatened.
5. (1 point) Provide at least one online or print source used to support your responses to the
prompts provided in this performance task.
For each online source, include the permanent URL. Identify the author, title, source,
the date you retrieved the source, and, if possible, the date the reference was written
or posted. No specific format is required.
For each print source, include the author, title of excerpt/article and magazine or book,
page number(s), publisher, and date of publication.
Include references for any part of your infographic that you downloaded from the
Internet.
Convert your document with your responses to a pdf file.
Submission
1. Submit the pdf file of your infographic OR supply the publicly available link to your
infographic in the assignment comment box.
2. Submit a pdf file of the responses to Questions #1 – 5 above:
If you have any specific questions, ask your TA.
