Assignment: Mechanical Design of a
Robotic Arm
Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you will delve into the world of robotics by designing a robotic arm.
This project will integrate concepts from dynamics and robotics, providing you with
hands-on experience in applying theoretical knowledge to practical engineering tasks.
The assignment will be worth 40% of your unit grade in ENG721.
Assignment Objectives
• Apply principles of dynamics to analyze the motion and behavior of robotic arms.
• Design a robotic arm using CAD software, considering factors such as kinematics,
workspace, and payload capacity.
Assignment Tasks
1. Literature Review (15%)
• Conduct a literature review on the principles of dynamics in robotic arm design.
• Summarize key findings and relevant methodologies in a written report.
2. Robotic Arm Design (25%)
• Design a robotic arm using CAD software (Ansys Discovery Modeling Tutorial -
Robotic Arm Geometry - Lesson 8 - ANSYS Innovation Courses).
• Considerfactorssuchaskinematics,jointtypes,degreesoffreedom,andend-effector
options.
• Optimize the design for efficiency, accuracy, and structural integrity.
Submission Requirements
• Written Report: Provide a comprehensive report detailing the design process,
implementation challenges, and performance evaluation results.
1
• Video Demonstration: Record a video demonstration showcasing the robotic
arm’s operation and task execution.
• Ansys File: Provide a comprehensive Ansys file.
