BML130 / Fundamentals of Website Development. Coursework Summary.
Part 1, Artefact (website): September 2019

Requirements
Using the techniques learnt in the module, you are required to ‘fix’ a poor website. You will address areas such as:
• Non-standard’s compliant or out-dated code
• Inefficient code (needless repetition, long file names etc.)
• Poorly formed HTML (e.g. styling in tags rather than CSS file)
• Poorly optimised images
• Areas hindering search engine optimisation and accessibility

Deliverables:
A three to four page (or equivalent) website. This does not need to be a complete or finished site. Think of it as a prototype, showing how
some key elements have been improved to contemporary web standards.
Your site will be ‘submitted’ by uploading to the Business School development server. It will not be emailed or uploaded to Moodle. At the
submission deadline all uploaded files will be automatically copied to another location.

Development brief
The development brief for all three sites is to:
1. Make mobile responsive for desktop, tablet and phone
2. Bring the code up to modern standards
3. Achieve 100% W3C standards compliancei (or as near as possible)

4. Improve the user experience
5. Make the site accessible by those with disabilities or impairments
6. Help the site owner effectively promote their business / sport / club to a specific as well as wider audience.
7. Improve the chances of a higher rating in search engines on appropriate keywords
Website minimum requirements
To meet the minimum standard your website will:
• Work effectively in the latest versions of the main desktop PC web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox). (We do not need to consider
Apple Macs for this assessment).
• Display adequately (i.e. all the required information is displayed even if there are some minor layout errors or inconsistencies) at
desktop, tablet and phone size. (This can be achieved with break points or using Bootstrap for example). There is no minimum for the
actual number of break points.
• Accessible, as far as possible, for those with impairments or disabilities

Marking criteria

• Evidence of the application of appropriate standards and techniques to develop the artefact.
The “artefact” is the website. There are many ways to build a web site but this assessment is looking for techniques which have been learnt and
perfected throughout the module. Marks will be awarded on the basis of the quality and efficiency of the code along with demonstrating a good
understanding of development and testing techniques covered throughout the module.
Should you wish to use technology or methods not covered in class, please ensure you discuss this with the module tutor well in advance.
• Evidence for the allowance of interoperability in development process.

While “interoperability” does cover cross browser compliance, it also means support across mobile devices. It means functioning effectively on popular
devices, responding the device to offer an engaging user experience. Marks will be awarded for creative thinking and appropriate (or innovative)
layouts at smaller screen sizes. Marks will not be gained by simply reducing the size or eliminating of page elements purely to make them ‘fit’ smaller
screens.
• Evidence of attainment of (re)development goal for chosen website in accordance with development brief.
The development must be purposeful, not random or arbitrary. The goals for improving the site may differ in emphasis or interpretation, but a clear
development strategy to fix definable problems or shortcomings is required.

Word limit equivalent - 1,750. (This does not mean the words on the website).

Further details
Marks are not awarded on the basis of quantity. There will be many ‘dead’ pages in the site and marks will not be awarded for simply creating
more pages.
Marks are award on the quality of the solution, not the technology used. The use of frameworks such as Bootstrap, or more advanced CSS
techniques such as Flexbox does not automatically mean a higher mark. There is no penalty for sites built completely ‘by hand’ i.e. without the
use of frameworks.
If you have any queries, it is your responsibility to discuss these with the module tutor well in advance of the hand-in date.
No allowance will be made for late submission if your technology fails. If the University technology should be unavailable, then appropriate
extensions will be granted with no penalty.
