Healthy Living (Project Outline)

CCST4123

Project Assignment (20%)

The course assignment will take the form of report, information leaflet and presentation, given by groups of 3 -

4 students. This is an important part of your assessment accounting for a major contribution to 20% of your

final grade. I expect this to be reflected in the degree of effort and the success in arousing class interest and

giving a detail account of a nutrition controversy/myth of interest to the public. Once you have formed your

groups you need to decide on your project topic. Topics for the report, information leaflet and oral presentation

must be submitted for approval in the 4

th

tutorial class. Students can choose their own topic as follows or devise

a topic which is of interest in their group.

Possible topics:

1. Effects of intermittent fasting on health

2. Is there a link between poverty and poor health?

3. Special diets for health and/or weight loss

4. Should people be encouraged to turn to homeopathy first?

5. How to stop emotional overload, relieve anxiety, and eliminate negative energy

6. Special diets for mental health

7. Special diets for athletes

8. Special diets for seniors (elders)

9. Are plant-based meat products healthy?

10. Is cholesterol bad for health?

11. Organic foods vs non-organic foods

12. Diets for a healthy planet

13. Effects of global warming on health

14. Is dreaming healthy?

15. Effects of social media on health

16. Effects of social connectedness on health

17. Effects of skeletal muscle strength for health

18. How to sleep better at night?

19. Effects of oral health on general health

20. Effects of probiotics on health

Please make sure that enough information has been collected for your report and project before topic

submission. It will not be possible to have more than one group doing the same topic in a tutorial class. You

may start working on your project as soon as it is approved.

Report (10%) and Leaflet (5%)

Each group has to submit a report that highlights a specific aspect of healthy living and demonstrates

students’ ability to apply concepts, analytical and reasoning skills. It is expected that you will also take into

consideration the impact of media, marketing strategy, culture, and ethics in your project wherever possible.

You are required to use data and evidence from reliable resources to support or refute an issue. The

2

written report should be at least 1,000 words and no more than 1,500 words, excluding the reference list. It

consists of an introduction, body, conclusion and reference.

• Introduction: You can take it as an opportunity to catch the reader attention by opening with a

quotation, a phenomenon, a question, or the origin of controversy. The introduction is used for telling

the reader the topic and suggesting the organization of your report.

• Body: You need to provide evidence to support your opinion or to refute opposing viewpoints. You

may use statistics, research, real life experiences or examples for elaboration. You may put some

figures, tables, charts and pictures in the report.

• Conclusion: You may summarize the main points and re-state your standpoint in this part, or you may

choose to end with a personal comment, call for action, or recommendation.

• Reference: You should have the reference quoted in presentation.

ALL group members must FULLY participate in the report production. Individual work and

contribution should be indicated in the report.

Each group should submit one report to the “Turnitin” link on SOUL (the tutorial page). The

“Turnitin” score must be less than 30% of similarity (excluding the reference list).

Each group must also prepare a double-sided A4-sized information leaflet to introduce and explain the

issue to the public for healthcare promotion and education. The topic, tutorial number, student numbers and

names should be included in the leaflet.

Each group has to submit the report and leaflet by the end of the semester.

Oral Presentation (5%)

The topics for the presentation will be a description and account of a nutrition controversy/myth of interest to

the public that is associated with the selected topic.

The output from your project will take the following forms:

1) A PowerPoint or video presentation lasting for 10-15 minutes in which you are expected to include the

following items:

• Introduction, body, conclusion and reference

*The above are suggested guidelines (NOT limitations!) for organizing your presentation. Flexibility is

allowed and creativity is strongly encouraged in your oral presentation. Try to make good use of your

analytical mind to justify your viewpoints.

• A Q&A session will be followed immediately after your presentation. You must be prepared to answer

questions on your presentation as this will be an important component of the assessment.

• For those groups opting for PowerPoint presentation, you are required to submit a hard copy of the

PowerPoint slides right before the presentation.

Presentations will be given 1-2 per lecture according to the schedule supplied by your tutor. Groups which fail

to present in their allocated time slot without reasonable excuse will not receive any marks.

3

Note that the time of presentations will be carefully controlled. Groups that exceed the permitted time by more

than 20% will be penalized. For those groups opting for PowerPoint presentation, you must practise your

presentation together as a group before your scheduled appearance.

Groups are also responsible for ensuring the availability or compatibility of the media they are using with the

classroom computer. It is advisable to have a back-up e.g. CD + memory stick. DO NOT try to download

enormous files from the internet in the classroom. Groups that need excessive amounts of time to start their

presentation or are unable to present for avoidable technical reasons may also be penalized.

Participation

ALL group members must FULLY participate in report, leaflet and presentation production. In case of unequal

participation in group work, marks will be deducted from the individuals concerned.
