OLET1139 - Final Assignment You are required to submit an essay of 1000 words and a five minute recorded presentation sum- marising your main findings by 18 October, 23:59. The essay should answer the following ques- tions: You have been asked by the Australian Institute of Family Studies to prepare a short essay on the impact of COVID-19 on some of the social issues in Australia. In your essay, use economic concepts and perspectives to address the following issues: A. Describe the trends in marriage, divorce, and fertility rates in Australia over the last 50 years. In what ways, both during and after, did the COVID-19 pandemic influence these trends? Make sure you have the diagram(s) to support your answer. B. Using an economics perspective, identify and explain the factors/policies that might impact people’s decision about marriage, divorce and having children (at least 3 factors for each of the social issue). C. How has manner in which relationships are formed changed over the last 50 years? Has there been an impact on this trend DURING and AFTER COVID-19? Will this impact persist well beyond the end of the pandemic? D. What policies might you recommend (could be more than one policy) to the Australian government to address declining fertility rates? What are some examples of policies enacted in other countries to address this issue? In your answer, provide and explain some unintended consequences of such policies. The discussion that you set out may be enhanced by any research that you refer to in your paper. We would encourage you to search for other relevant infor- mation about the question. Government reports and academic research papers are a good place to look. • Your discussion should draw on the economic concepts and reasoning that have been devel- oped in this unit. Grading the Presentation • The presentation represents 10% of your final grade for OLET1139 • Presentations will be graded on the basis of the quality of presentation and how well the students are able to highlight the key findings of their essay. • Particular emphasis on students showing a capability to enhance the presented material of their presentation within the slides by providing additional verbal context to their findings. • Graders will stop marking presentations after the 6 minute mark. 3 Rubric Essays will be graded using the following grading table: 1) Content and Organization Score Part A.
