ASSESSMENT 1:

QUIZZES

PURPOSE

Each quiz aims to encourage you to read the week’s assigned readings before the lecture. The

readings provide you with the core knowledge required to gain the most from this course. So, your

pre-reading will allow the lectures and tutorials to provide greater value for all by extending upon

that foundation. Participation in lectures and tutorials will thus be focused on refining this core

knowledge and applying the concepts.

FORMAT AND SUBMISSION

Format

• In weeks 1-5, and 7-10, a ten question quiz will be made available via the Moodle subject

website on Monday at 4pm. Each quiz will close 48 hours later on Wednesday at 4pm.

• Ten minutes are allocated to complete each quiz.

• Each quiz may contain multiple-choice, true/false, or short answer questions.

• The score of your best eight quizzes will be summed to provide an overall mark.

• Each quiz contains questions about the content of the week’s readings. Thus, you should

prepare by reading the assigned readings, taking notes so as to engage in active learning

(to enhance recall and understanding of what was read), and ensure that you ask questions

if you do not understand any of the materials.

Submission

• Via a link within the course Moodle site (https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/login/index.php)

• There is no opportunity to retake the quiz or do a quiz that you missed unless an application

for Special Considerations is made and approved.

ASSESSMENT 2: RECOMMENDATIONS REPORT 1

PURPOSE

To analyse an organisation and develop SHRM recommendations applicable to it.

TOPIC

You will use the weeks 1-4 course materials to answer the question:

What approach should the organisation take in its strategic HRM activities?

You will analyse one of the following organisations.

• University of Technology Sydney (www.uts.edu.au/)

• Accenture (www.accenture.com/au-en)

• NSW Department of Health (www.health.nsw.gov.au/)

i) Identify organisational strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) relevant to SHRM

• You should identify the organisation’s SWOT and the SHRM implications of your SWOT.

• You can cover as many SHRM implications as you require.

ii) Provide recommendations for SHRM improvement

• Outline SHRM recommendations that flow from the SHRM implications you identified.

• Ensure that you justify these and identify specific actions that will enhance effectiveness.

FORMAT AND SUBMISSION: VIDEO REPORT

Overview

You will submit your individual report as a 10 minute video.

Evaluation criteria

• See “Marking rubric for Report 1”.

Formatting requirements:

• Maximum length of 10 minutes.

Submission

• Submit your video report via the link on the course Moodle site.

You will provide feedback on the video report of three classmates who examined different

organisations than yours. This will allow you to learn from your peer’s insights, approach to

analysing organisations, and presentation style. Thus, the peer review process will help you to

prepare your Report 2 by confirming if you are approaching your organisational analysis in the

right direction or if you need to be more specific with your recommendations and their justifications.

Evaluation criteria

• You will receive a mark (pass/fail) based on the quality of written peer feedback you provide

Submission

• Via the course Moodle site (https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/login/index.php)

• There are no extensions available for peer feedback

ASSESSMENT 3:

RECOMMENDATIONS REPORT 2

PURPOSE

This assignment provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your high level of understanding

of the course materials covered so far (especially weeks 5-8).

TOPIC

Prepare an evidence-based analysis of an important problem that one or more organisations face

and a persuasive set of HR recommendations for what should be done to address the problem you

identified.

EVIDENCE FOR THE ANALYSES

support your analysis by drawing upon:

• Course concepts in the readings/lectures/tutorials

The following are simply illustrative examples of topics that might be addressed. But you can and

should consider alternatives topics as the potential focus of your analysis:

• A low growth economy

• Low productivity

• Low unemployment

Section 2. Based upon your Section 1 insights, provide actionable recommendations for people

who design and/or implement HRM.
