MDIAS3092 Media in the Asia Pacific

Assessment 2: Tutorial Group Facilitation – Asia Pacific Media Case Study

Weighting - 20%

Length: roughly 45 minutes per week, including class discussion, and dependent on size of

group

Task Description

Working in small groups, this task requires you to identify, analyze and present a case study

addressing a concept that will be given to you when facilitation groups are organised in Week 1.

Your selected case study should focus on an example of regional media that helps us to better

understand and explore the critical dimensions of the concepts and theories raised in one of the

weekly topics.

The group facilitation assignment will be coordinated by your tutor and will take place in your

tutorial groups between weeks 3--9. Group sizes may vary depending on the number of people

enrolled in your tutorial. Typically, groups will consist of 4 students. During Week 1 your tutor

will assign you a concept and a week to present on along with the rest of your group members.

Working together with your classmates you should identify a case study of a media related

example that helps us explore the concept assigned to you by your tutor. The analysis should

bring out the key ideas of your topic and illustrate your concept. In formulating your

presentation students should consider and present on the following:

1) Introduce your case study. The case study should involve some facet of media; for

example, it could be a media outlet or corporation, a policy, a film or even a film studio or

genre, a specific example of popular culture (television, music, bands, fandoms,

podcasts, online communities, etc.), social media platforms and apps etc. You can think

broadly about what ‘media’ is, although obviously it should be closely related to your

topic. What background and contextual information is relevant for us to know about this

example? 2) Identify and discuss the concept and related ideas from the week that are relevant to

understanding this example. What does your case study help us explore? What critical

issues are raised by your example? 3) Illustrate your example is there something we can watch, look at, listen to, or read that

will give us a better understanding of this example. 4) Analyze the case study. Working together with the entire class, what would you like us to

discuss about this example? Does the case study raise any consequences that should

be debated, grey areas or ethical dimensions we should explore? 5) Conclude. What does the case study suggest about the week’s theories and concepts? Are they useful for understanding the global dimensions of media? Or do they need to be

revised considering your example? In completing this task, you should strive to come up with some original1 case study to which

you can meaningfully apply the concepts and ideas from your topic. You should not feel as

though you need to be an ‘expert’ on this example, but you should feel confident that it is related

to the topic at hand and that working together with your tutor and the class we can make

productive use of the time allotted to better understand the issues of the week.

Presenters should avoid filling the tutorial entirely with a pre-prepared speech that is read out- loud recounting the lecture or paraphrasing the readings. This is not an assignment where the

group stands up in front of the class or in Blackboard collaborate and proceeds to individually

read through separate “tutorial papers”. Instead, you should focus your presentation on how

best to exemplify and stimulate intellectual discussion of the concept and related ideas.

1 By original, we mean that the examples and contexts you choose to present and discuss with the class

are NOT the same examples and contexts discussed that were discussed in detail in the readings or

lectures. If something is mentioned briefly in the lecture, that’s fine, you can still dive deeper into it in your

tutorial presentation.

Assessment Criteria

To do well on this assignment you will need to:

● Demonstrate a deep understanding of the main issues and concepts from your topic ● Analyze an original case study which illustrate the main issues and concepts from your topic ● Structure your presentation logically and effectively to explore and promote understanding of main issues and concepts from your topic ● Engage the class in discussion and other learning activities that promotes deeper understanding of the main issues and concepts from your topic Special Consideration

If you are unable to present due to illness or misadventure on your scheduled day, you will need

to apply for special consideration with the University. You can read all about that process and

make an application directly from this page here https://student.unsw.edu.au/special- consideration

If you are granted special consideration, the standard outcome will be to reschedule you for a

new presentation topic.
