DDES9903 - Assessment 1
Instructions on Completing this Task
While you are free to complete this task in any way you see fit, you may find the guidance provided in this
section to be useful. Please do not feel constrained by these steps. Modify them as you require, except where
it is specified that you “should” do something.
1. (Recommended timing: Week 1, 2) Create a very small foundation story that adheres to or otherwise
uses the story structures and conventions discussed in class.
1.1. You may use the provided scenario and event samples to create a coherent story. Please check
Moodle for the latest samples.
1.2. You may also create your own foundation story from scratch if you wish, however please keep
in mind that we are assessing story structure and execution - not the story itself..
2. (Recommended timing: Week 3, 4) Use the foundation story to design a self-contained linear
narrative experience. Produce a functional interactive storyboard to convey the story design.
2.1. Download the EZPZ Interaction Toolkit. Please check Moodle for the latest version.
2.2. Experiment with the pre-built components.
2.2.1. Get familiar with with the placement of objects and modification of space
2.2.2. Get familiar with navigating the space
2.2.3. Experiment with interactive objects like sound and animation triggers
2.3. Using the provided pre-built components, produce a functional digital walkthrough to allow a
viewer to appreciate your vision and/or give good direction to a development team to implement
it. Design each story stage iteratively (e.g. exposition, rise, climax, resolution).
2.3.1. Create a draft walkthrough of your story stage using the provided available components.
2.3.1.1. You should not worry about full implementation. For example, if you want to
have a monster appear in your story, don’t worry about having a monster that
can move around, or interact within the world. Simply place a representation or a
stand-in of the monster to give an appreciation of where in the space it should
appear, its scale, and the intended effect it should have on the audience.
2.3.1.2. You should use audio clips, written notes, image references or anything else
that might be useful in conveying the intended design and audience reaction.
2.3.2. Play through the storyboard and note any required changes. Also note your rationale
and justification for the changes.
2.3.3. Return to step 2.3.1 (i.e. modify your draft) and repeat until satisfied with changes.
2.3.4. Give the draft storyboard to someone else to test. Note their reactions and see which
parts of your design were understood, successful or unsuccessful. Note any required
changes. Also note your rationale and justification for the changes.
2.3.5. Return to step 2.3.1 (i.e. modify your draft) and repeat until satisfied.
2.3.6. Once satisfied, return to step 2.3 (i.e. move to the next story stage).
3. (Recommended timing: Week 4, 5) Using the notes you have gathered and generated in Step 2, write
a short report - no longer than 1000 words - to summarise your design and your justifications for your
design choices. Your report should include:
3.1. The final version of your foundation story, outlining the different stages of your story structure
(e.g. exposition, rise, climax, resolution).
3.2. Details of where you have employed multimodal, spatial and enacted elements to convey linear
narrative
3.3. Justification of your design choices, including references.
3.4. Any other relevant information, including any difficulties encountered and solutions.
4. You should use the “Marking Guide” at the end of this document to allocate your efforts.
