< (https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/assignments/493521) Important intellectual property requirements Look for public domain and certain crea ve commons (h ps ://crea vecommons.org/about/cclicenses/) content (CC BY; CC BY-SA; CC BY-NC; CC BY-NC-SA); (videos, images, sound, music (h ps ://archive.org/details/freemusicarchive) , etc.), or create your own images. Always give credit for the content you've used, including work you created yourself. You must not use copyrighted material in your por olio unless it is for educa on or cri cism. You can use AI image generators but must acknowledge how you created them (pla orm and prompt). The excep ons are for the gadgets in Week 2 and the collage in Week 7 (as these uses are for study or cri cism). Relationship to the workshop exercises Each week you will do some basic exercises relevant to that week's topic. We scaffold these for you so you can develop some basic skills using the element during the class. We do not expect you to create the por olio element in that hour. Do so in your own me. Your por olio should not use any of the material provided in the workshop, and it should address the theme that you specify. Follow the brief for each element below. The best por olios will sustain a conceptually, visually and textually cohesive theme. Help! I don't have technology skills We recognise that students come into this class with various skill levels in media produc on. While it is not permissible to submit anything that has been created by someone else, you can get help from others to learn relevant techniques and troubleshoot your work. You will be assessed mainly for your ideas and not your technical skills. Choose a portfolio theme Each student should choose a theme to explore through the por olio. Discuss possible themes with your tutor and the class. The theme could be a style, genre, mo f or concept. You can come up with your own theme, but here are some examples: Gothic (neo-gothic buildings on USyd campus; horror themes. There are many interpreta ons of the gothic (Wikipedia (h ps ://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic) )) Cyberpunk (science fic on aesthe c of dystopia and high technology) Speed (e.g. emphasis on fast-moving vehicles; tachophobia; futurism) 2024/4/10 17:30Element portfolio instructions https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/assignments/4935202/7 Metropolis (the 1927 movie is out of copyright now (h ps ://www.cultureslate.com/explained/metropolis-enters- the-public-domain-and-what-it-means-for-this-classic-film) ; or you could use a wider theme of the city) Digital rhythm (images of musical instruments; make your own music) Gadget culture (choose an interes ng gadget to feature through your por olio) Self-portrait (interpret your own image in different digital elements. Research portraiture) Glitches and fails (explore the aesthe c dimensions of failure; research glitch culture) Future shock (retro-futurism) Archaic tech (old technologies; nostalgia; steampunk) Comic (draw your own comics; research literature on comics and digital media) Create a Sway Sway is not only a pla orm for containing the media content you create. It's a medium in its own right. Choose the style and fonts to suit your por olio theme. Tweak the way that the end user experiences your Sway. Create your Sway using this template (h ps ://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/files/34331285?wrap=1) (h ps ://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/files/34331285/download?download_frd=1) . This will create all the Cards for the por olio. Here is Chris's sample Sway (still under development). Chris Chesher Briefs for topics 2024/4/10 17:30Element portfolio instructions https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/assignments/4935203/7 2 Gadgets Choose a gadget from the Consumer Electronics Show from one of these ar cles: Wired (h ps ://www.wired.com/live/ces-2023-liveblog-highlights/) , CNet (h ps ://www.cnet.com/tech/the-most-noteworthy-tech- at-ces-2023-we-couldnt-ignore/) , Rolling Stone (h ps ://www.rollingstone.com/product-recommenda ons/lifestyle/ces- 2023-highlights-lg-sony-samsung-lenovo-1234659610/) , Tech Radar (h ps ://www.techradar.com/au/tag/ces) , Digital Trends (h ps ://www.digitaltrends.com/topic/ces/) , the Verge (h ps ://www.theverge.com/23496511/ces-2023-news- products-announcements-tvs-laptops-fitness-trackers) or Tom's Guide (h ps ://www.tomsguide.com/news/ces-2023) . Find a clean image you can use in your diagram. Analyse the gadget's affordances, and build a diagram. Don't just label the components: iden fy how users relate to it. Include a tle at the top of the image. 3 Bodies Use Pixlr to construct a collage ‘self-portrait’ illustra ng how your body relates to technology – prostheses that extend your body, sensors that capture data and control (quan fied self) about it, and mul media spectacles and physical devices you experience. 4 Sound Write your own script that responds to the overall theme of your por olio. Create a 30 second narra ve audio piece that uses loca on recording, sound effects and/or sound processing to create a sense of story, place and mood. Upload it into Sway. In your exegesis, specify the sources of your sounds and how you processed them. Explain the aesthe c mo va on of the piece: what meanings did you intend? How did you use sound modality? How did you make use of sound marks (lecture)? 5 Moving Image Create a 30-second montage responding to the theme of your por olio. Use public domain or crea ve commons video, images and sound such as the Prelinger archives (h ps ://archive.org/details/prelinger) . Use only cuts or cross- fades (no other transi ons). In your exegesis, explain the type of montage you used, and the aesthe c that you were seeking. Iden fy the source of all your footage. Use copyright-free sound effects, music and/or dialogue. Upload it into Sway. 6 Text Create logos and tles for your theme in the form of the following logos or tles. Add new pages for each tle. Label each one. Movie opening tle/poster (All caps; Display typeface) Corporate Logotype (use a serif font; black and white) Personal note (script/cursive typeface) Album art (mix of typefaces. Split text into blocks) 2024/4/10 17:30Element portfolio instructions https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/assignments/4935204/7 Monospace Other... Export logos as JPEG (if you include photos) or PNG (for basic graphics) Add your 5 logotype images to your Week 6 Sway entry as a stack. You can use one of these for the first image in Sway if you want. Wordcloud Include a wordcloud of a text (recommended Project Gutenberg). Briefly analyse the results. 7 Images Capture your own image of someone using a piece of technology against a plain background. Manipulate the image to create six versions and add them as a slideshow in your Sway (h ps ://www.office.com/launch/sway) por olio. 1. High modality (realis c; possibly use HDR) 2. Historical (monochrome; vigne e) 3. Fantasy / dream / hallucina on 4. Drama / focus 5. Glitch 6. X-ray / LIDAR Use Pixlr.com (h ps ://pixlr.com) or any other form of image manipula on. The image must be recognisable in some way. In the text you must explain your process for each image (i.e. your design strategy, so ware and technique), and the meanings you wanted to convey. 8 Algorithms The minimum por olio entry for this week is to prepare the following elements for a Discord server: Server Choose a server name, create an icon (256 x 256px) and write a descrip on of the purpose of the server. This should relate to the theme of your por olio. If your server works, add an invita on link to your Discord server in the por olio. Application Choose an applica on name, an icon (256 x 256px) and a descrip on of the applica on's features (which is to create the bot). Bot Choose the bot's user name and its appearance as an icon (256 x 256px). 2024/4/10 17:30Element portfolio instructions https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/assignments/4935205/7 Prepare a welcome message that includes 3 versions of welcome text in the bot's character, including basic informa on, a welcome graphic (256 x 256 px), and a footer (underneath). For bonus points: Include a screen movie of someone entering your Discord server and being greeted by the bot that you created. 9 Artificial Intelligence Create a short video (30 seconds maximum) of an ar ficial human using AI tools such as those introduced in the Ar ficial Intelligence week: Develop a character/persona of the ar ficial human and a scenario rela ng to your por olio theme Create a s ll image of that character using text-to-image AI (Midjourney, Dall-e 2, DiffusionBee, NightCafe) Write a dra script of a monologue by the character using ChatGPT Convert the text of the script to speech to create an audio file using h ps://beta.elevenlabs.io/speech-synthesis (h ps ://beta.elevenlabs.io/speech-synthesis) or similar Make a video anima ng the character's face based on the sound (h ps://www.d-id.com (h ps ://www.d-id.com) ). Note: it is possible to complete the whole task within h ps://www.d-id.com (h ps ://www.d-id.com) , but we recommend using separate tools. Create each of these elements with AI, but you can edit the image, script, audio and video if necessary. 10 Games Write (or generate) a 200-300 word cultural studies analysis of your favourite game. If you use ChatGPT, include the prompt you use, and write a paragraph reflec on on the effec veness of this as a way of genera ng the text. You can use any of these approaches: GAMES AND CULTURE How did the wider culture shape the game? What were the contexts for the game's produc on and consump on? GAMES AS CULTURE What cultural prac ces and communi es have emerged around this game? What genres or groupings does the game belong to? What issues does the game raise? GAMES IN CULTURE How has this game influenced the wider culture? 11 Platforms Create a 4-slide pitch for a new media pla orm. This can be a stand-alone pla orm or a way of using other pla orms. SLIDE 1: What is the name of your pla orm, the tag line and your business name? SLIDE 2: What is the market for your pla orm? SLIDE 3: What are the features of your pla orm? SLIDE 4: How does your pla orm use datafica on and commodifica on? 2024/4/10 17:30Element portfolio instructions https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/55154/assignments/4935206/7 Academic integrity While the University is aware that the vast majority of students and staff act ethically and honestly, it is opposed to and will not tolerate academic integrity breaches and will treat all allega ons seriously. Further informa on on academic integrity, and the resources available to all students can be found on the academic integrity pages on the current students website: h ps://sydney.edu.au/students/academic-integrity.html (h ps ://sydney.edu.au/students/academic-integrity.html) . We use Turni n, which includes AI detec on, to detect poten al instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further inves ga on. You may only use ar ficial intelligence and wri ng assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permi ed to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement sec on. Further informa on for on research integrity and ethics for postgraduate research students and students undertaking research-focussed coursework such as Honours and capstone research projects can be also be found on the current students website: h ps://sydney.edu.au/students/research-integrity-ethics.html (h ps ://sydney.edu.au/students/research- integrity-ethics.html) .
