General instructions
In order to undertake the assignment, students should do the following:
• Form groups on Canvas and nominate a group leader.
• Submission requires a written document (3000 words +/- 10%). The length of document
does not include list of references, table of contents and appendices.
• For further information, please refer to the business school policies:
http://sydney.edu.au/business/currentstudents/policy.
• Final report submission: The group should prepare the report and the group leader
should submit it on Canvas by due date (i.e., only one person from the group should submit
the assignment). Please include the SIDs of each student in the group on the front page
of the submission. The link for submission can be found on Canvas in the Assessment

• Please submit the assignment as a pdf file.
• Use Arial font, size 11 points

• Proof-read and sense-check your report before submitting it.
• Use the Business School Referencing Guide (APA 6th or 7th edition is fine).
• Members in each group are expected to work collaboratively. In the event there are
unequal contributions by different members in a group, the group leader should submit a
"Group Contribution Sheet" signed by all group members by the assignment due date at
a separate link provided on Canvas (i.e. only one signed contribution sheet for a group).
If contributions are equal, Group Contribution Sheet submission is not required. The
template of Group Contribution Sheet is available on Canvas.
• IMPORTANT: A group can submit the assignment only once! Please make sure that the
file that you submit is the final version.
Requirements
Radiant Star1 is a fast growing medium-sized company based in Sydney. The company has a
diversified portfolio of businesses in service industries. It is a major concern of the board of
directors that in recent years, some of the company’s major projects were delayed, experienced
cost blowouts and did not realise the expected benefits. In order to address this problem, the
board has mandated that all major projects in the future should be managed using PRINCE2
methodology.
1 This is a hypothetical company.
1
To benefit from potential market opportunities, Radiant Star had undertaken an initial evaluation
of the following two business ideas, and it now wants to proceed by developing a detailed Project
Initiation Document (PID). The company plans to commence implementation of these projects
from July 2024.
1. Project proposal 1: Establish 8 modern childcare centres in Sydney. These centres will
be in the CBD and key suburbs of Sydney. They will be open from 6:30am to 6:30pm on
weekdays and will enrol children in the age group of 6 months to 5 years. The proposed
venture will differentiate itself from competitors based on its superior services in
developing children’s mental and physical capabilities. Recruiting well-trained and
experienced staff will be crucial for the success of the venture. The centres will have
state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities to support children’s intellectual and physical
development. Information technology and its applications will play a key role in running
the business. The business will comply with strict regulatory requirements of the
childcare sector.
2. Project proposal 2: Establish a vehicle rental business comprising a chain of five
electric vehicle (EV) rental outlets in the Sydney CBD and its suburbs. Given the
expected strong uptake of EVs in the coming years, the company envisions excellent
growth opportunity for the venture. It has ruled out establishing the business as a
franchisee of existing car rental companies. The company’s primary target market will be
tourists and short-term rentals for business travellers. The company wants the proposed
business operations to be efficiently run, supported by robust data analytics and a mobile
app. It wants to differentiate its business through excellent customer service and
competitive prices.
Radiant Star’s CEO has asked your group to prepare a detailed Project Initiation
Document (PID) for ANY ONE (ONLY ONE) of the above project proposals. It is a
requirement that your PID should conform to the PRINCE2 methodology. The PID
should be presented using the structure given in Week 5 lecture slides under the
heading, “Project Initiation Document (PID) – Contents”. Please note that key
points of the business case should be briefly discussed in the “Business Case”
section of the PID. Details of the Business Case (including risk register) should be part
of the appendices to the PID (please see Week 5 lecture slides titled PRINCE2
Business Case Contents). You are required to undertake relevant research, make
appropriate assumptions and justify those assumptions.
General Expectations:
• Clear, well-structured and written presentation that captures the major aspects of the report
in a succinct manner.
• Apply all relevant parts of PRINCE2 methodology in order to develop the PID.
• Conduct your own research to support your arguments and to understand the project context
• Apply a structure to each section of your report to guide the reader and demonstrate you
have applied a comprehensive and systematic approach
• You are required to use third-party references to support your arguments where
appropriate.
A useful starting point for online research is Google Scholar and IBISWorld (accessed via the
USYD Library). http://www.library.usyd.edu.au/databases/
Remember the instructions for scientific writing, particularly referencing!
