Public Health
• Definition of key terms (this is needed in Q2a, 2b, 3b and 4)
• Appropriate referencing of sources including the selected journal article –please
make sure you explore the University Library resources on citation and referencing

• Use the article as a starting point and go beyond it to other sources to help answer the questions in the assignment, for example use readings set from days 1 and 2; use Google Scholar or the Library to help find other related evidence about the issue
• At least five references should be used, including the selected article (article plus a minimum of 4 other references, up to ten references, but no more than this.)
• Answers presented in sentences beneath the questions posed, NOT in essay format and NOT in dot points or tables
• Evidence of further research beyond the selected journal article.

Learning objective
This assignment aims to give students the opportunity to identify and analyse the public health significance of, and public health actions that respond to, a health issue within a population. These peer reviewed academic articles discuss a public health challenge using a population health
perspective. Lecture content and readings from Days 1 and 2 (February 22rd, February 23th) will help with assignment preparation.
Assignment Topic
Answer the following questions in relation to ONE of the journal articles listed on the following page.
Question 1a.
What is the public health issue or problem that the article addresses? (Mark - 1) Question 1b.
Identify the population group(s) or population sub-group(s) of interest. (Mark - 1) Question 1c.
Using at least one other source of evidence as well as the selected article, provide a brief summary of what is known about this public health issue (Marks - 3)
Question 2a.
Identify and briefly discuss the determinants that affect the health of the population
group of interest. You may locate your discussion in the context of the broader determinants of health affecting this population group (Marks - 3)
Question 2b.
Identify and briefly discuss health inequalities and inequities that are experienced by this population group, pertaining to the public health issue of interest. (Marks - 3) NB this answer should follow on from your answer to Q2a. in which you discuss determinants of the health of the population and then in 2b. you will discuss the health inequalities (measurable differences in health outcomes) and any relevant health inequities (unfair, avoidable difference causes by unequal distribution of resources and opportunity) that these determinants have produced.
Question 3a.
Describe at least two public health actions (strategies/interventions) that have been implemented in response to the health problem or issue, using the article and other sources. (Marks - 3) Question 3b.
Identify which domain(s) of public health the actions identified in question 3a sit within. Provide a brief rationale for your classification of the action. (Marks - 3)
Question 4.
Identify two World Health Organisation health system building blocks relevant to the public health issue of interest and discuss how these elements of the health system relate to the public health issue of interest. (Marks 3)
