ABPL90032 Assignment 3 (Weighting 50% of the overall unit mark)

For this project, students should form groups, with each group of 2 students to work on this
project. Students in the same group will receive the same marks for this project.
As a construction professional you will be working in a context where you will need to manage the design, construction, cost and programming of building services of construction projects. Assignment 3 uses a scenario-based case study to make the application of your knowledge relevant to the real world.
Work to do:
Manage the building services design, cost and programming for the construction of a 2-storey office building (around 1000m2) in Melbourne. You can either choose to design your own building or use any other architectural drawings which are available to you. The following items should be covered:
1. Project Background Information (5 marks)
• Project objectives, project scope, architectural drawings (floor plans).
2. Design Solutions (50 marks)
• Mechanical Services Plant – Major plant equipment for HVAC system. Estimation of cooling load and heating load required. (5 marks)
• Mechanical Services Distribution – HVAC distribution system, pipework, ductwork and air vents, etc. Drawings and estimation of air flow rate and duct size required. (20 marks)
• Electrical and Lighting Services – Electrical distribution schematic diagram and lighting compliance (maximum illumination power load calculation required). (10 marks)
• BMS – Major devices and equipment. Diagrams required. (15 marks)
3. Costing Summary for HVAC, Electrical and Lighting, BMS Services (25 marks)
• Costing Spreadsheet of all items, bill of quantities, taken from Rawlinson’s (can use rate where total cost not relevant)
4. Workflow Schedule/Programming (10 marks)
• Gantt Chart identifying workflow process, WBS diagram, approximate timing, critical path and milestones.
The report format, structure, tidiness, language, reference count and similarity checks for 10 marks.
Note: The above requirements are to be completed at a high level. You are not expected to get all the details correct (e.g., the size of the pipework, the accurate number of fans, pumps, dampers, valves, lights, sensors, controllers, the length of the electrical wires, etc), but you are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the major issues in designing and constructing the building services.
Deliverables:
Group Final Report: Each group must submit a report for this project.
It is critical that the report is reflective of a group effort in the submission and each part of the report should be consistent with the others.
Word count guide: 3000 words in total plus drawings and supporting documentation. You are encouraged to use sketches, photos, tables, or figures to illustrate your points. Project Timeline:
