UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage Group 10 - BENV0126 Abstract The fundamental goal of The Natural History Museum (NHM), as stated on its website, is to ‘create advocates for the planet: individuals who feel sufficiently informed, confident and motivated to make wise decisions, to get involved, and to use their influence and actions to make a positive difference to the global future’. (The Natural History Museum, n.d.) Following this goal are strategies that the museum has made effort to visualizing it. This project aims to look at how NHM functions as a sustainable learning tool that does not only focus on collection display within its site, but its relationship with the community, the institution, and the public, so that the museum is sustainable in the way that it serves its purpose, addresses global issues to encourage proactive change in the public’s everyday life, and is well-supported to continue its function. UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage Group 10 - BENV0126 4 3 Data Support of the Diagram Loop No. Supplementary Information R0 Research and development projects such as ‘My Body: My Planet’ which ‘use cultural genres to engage young people with the topic of climate and health, with a long-term goal of driving meaningful behaviour change’, are examples of the museum’s collaboration with outside organizations. These projects are to be evaluated by the Board of Trustees over time on its effectiveness. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) The NHM is supervised by DCMS on its operation with the reception of Government grant. For instance, the planning of NHM is bounded by the terms for receiving the Grant-in-Aid. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) Logan R. and Sutter G.C. (2012) mentioned in their article that scholars such as Janes R.R., Worts D. and Link T. believed that museums play an important role in education for sustainability. They urged museums to undergo transformation and take up a more active role in engaging the public to learn about the idea and need of sustainability. R2 Schools are places where museums can offer volunteering opportunities to young people to introduce them into the sector (Deakin, 2022) 50% of the partnership takes place between schools and museums for delivering museum-based education. Museums such as NHM also support teachers’ professional development on curriculum design and teacher training. (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, 2021) R3 NHM received £182m from the Government for the Science and Digitisation Centre in March 2020. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) R4 NHM partnered with the BBC and Warner Bros. for the production of ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Wonder of Nature’. The exhibition was seen by 135,000 visitors; The museum’s ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’, sponsored by Ørsted, was seen by over 87,000 visitors (and counting); last but not least, the museum’s critically acclaimed display, ‘Our Broken Planet: How We Got Here and Ways to Fix’ has been seen by more than 600,000 visitors. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) ‘Fantastic BeastsTM: The Wonder of Nature’ was shortlisted for the 2022 Museum & Heritage Awards for Partnership of the Year. The museum’s another free display, ‘Our Broken Planet: How We Got Here and Ways to Fix’ was shortlisted for the 2022 Museum & Heritage Awards for Temporary or Touring Exhibition of the Year. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) R6 & R7 It is part of NHM’s plan in collaboration with Urban Nature Project to transform its garden to bring research work into practice, allowing visitors to learn about biodiversity and be encouraged to learn about actions that they can take to help nature. (Davis, 2022) R9 One of the surveys in the report suggested that developing museum network, profile and audience were the main benefits for touring exhibition. Respondents of this survey involved professionals in touring exhibition and the public. (Dew, 2016) This loop presents the relationship between touring, audience engagement and improvement of NHM’s profile. For instance, In 2021 at COP26 in Glasgow, NHM’s participation successfully engaged a wider audience from on-the-site activities to online news update from the official channels. According to figures, its online media publication ‘achieved more than 78,500 views on Instagram, 22,400 views on Facebook and 39,300 views on Twitter’. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) R12 NHM profited from loaning its collection to national museums, universities and research organizations. (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, 2021) UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage Group 10 - BENV0126 5 R13 Donations from the public, exchange between museums, purchase of collections, staff collecting from collaborative fieldwork opportunities, etc., contribute to the expansion of NHM’s collection. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) R14 The NHM and the Kickstart scheme provide internship opportunities to young people for inspiring them on working in the museum. (The Natural History Museum, 2022) R16 (the same information as R9) R17 Smithson et al. (2018) discussed the role of volunteers in a museum with a few case studies. While the authors were uncertain about whether volunteers can replace regular staff, they highlighted the potential of developing volunteers into a staple in the museum with training and supervision, which help with the smooth operation of the museum. R18 According to the collaboration between NHM and economic consultants Frontier Economics, ‘digitisation has the potential to see a tenfold return on investment, creating benefits worth more than £2 billion over 30 years.’ (The Natural History Museum, 2022) R19 NHM loaned in collections to support its own research development. (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, 2021) B2 The NHM received a total of £1244k of grants from ‘competitive funding’ for research development, support on the use of technologies and its role in providing scientific infrastructure for research development worldwide.
