1. To what extent are improvements in levels of human capital a necessary condition for
economic development in poor countries? Critically discuss.


2. Critically discuss how the understanding of the causes of famines has changed over the
last 100 years. How can famines in the 21st century be explained?


3. ‘The relationship between inequality, poverty and economic growth is a three-way process:
growth, inequality and poverty all impact upon one another’. Explain and discuss this
statement with reference to development theories and the experience of developing
countries during the last 50 years.


4. Critically examine the Todaro-Harris (1969, 1970) explanation of rural-urban migration
based on intersectoral expected income differentials.


5. Critically discuss the extent to which increasing liberalisation of trade can act as an engine
of growth for Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) in the same way it acted as
an engine of growth for many More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs).


6. Critically discuss whether long run economic development is possible in the absence of

7. Can Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) continue to grow without placing
restrictions on international labour migration? Critically discuss the costs and benefits of
