ISE 525 Design of Experiments Spring Semester 2022 Project Due: Tuesday, April 26 Response Surface Study For this project, you will be exploring a surface for a single response. There are six predictor variables to consider. To investigate the surface, you will use the ISE 525 Project Laboratory software, see below. On your first visit to the "laboratory", you will learn about your objective, the region of operability, and the current operating point for your process. To obtain information about the response, you will design experiments and perform them in the laboratory. Your investigation of the surface should result in a recommended set of predictor variable values, which are intended to provide the best average response value available within the region of operability. Submit a report providing a concise discussion of your work. The body of the report should be a narrative that describes your approach to the study, decisions you made, results you obtained, and conclusions drawn. Include tables and figures, that describe experiment designs or summarize your analysis, within the body of your report. Place any calculations or detailed computer printouts in appendices. You may work individually, or in pairs. If you work with a partner, the team will submit one report and both individuals will receive the same grade. You may discuss the project with your classmates. However, each report must contain unique data, with analysis and conclusions appropriate to the data reported. The project reports will be graded using the evaluation criteria described below. Evaluation criteria: 1) Demonstrated understanding of the sequential nature of experimentation (30 points) 2) Efficiency of experiment designs (30 points) 3) Correct usage of analysis techniques (50 points) 4) Degree of response improvement over the average performance at the current operating point (40 points) ISE 525 Project Laboratory Software The Project Laboratory software is available in the Week 12 folder of the class web site. The downloaded file must be uncompressed (expanded, unzipped). Then, it can be executed from the Command Prompt, or by double-clicking on the program icon, on any computer running the Windows OS. When you run the program, the following will happen: a) The program will request the first 4 digits of your student ID number. If you are working with a partner, the program will request the first 4 digits from both of your ID numbers. This information will be used to determine the specific surface that you will explore. Your ID numbers will be printed in the output file. Be sure to use the same ID numbers each time you use the program. b) The program will request the name of an output file for the experiment results. You are limited to 15 characters for the file name. The output file will be stored in the same directory as the program file. c) The program will request the number of runs that you intend to perform. If you enter 0 here, the program will output the necessary background information for your response surface study, including: the objective, the region of operability, and the current operating point. If you enter a number greater than 0, the program will begin to request predictor values for the experiment. d) For each run of the experiment, the program will request values for the predictor variable settings. The values must be given in the natural units of the predictors, i.e. the same scaling that the program reports for your Region of Operability. The predictor variable values must be given in the order A, B, C, D, E, F. The values must be separated by spaces only. Do not inlude commas to indicate thousands. Enter the value 1000 rather than 1,000. e) The program will confirm the predictor variable settings before performing the experiment. If you agree with the reported settings, enter Yes to allow the experiment to proceed. If the settings are incorrect, enter No to re-enter the predictor variable values. If you wish to terminate the experiment, enter Quit to stop the program. f) When the experiment is completed, the results will be available in the output file. Include copies of all output files in your report.
