MCDB 1B Text book and study resources: The text is Campbell Biology by Urry, Cain,
Wasserman, Minorsky, and Reece (11th Edition) available at the bookstore and is on reserve
in the Davidson Library.

The course website: can be accessed at http://gauchospace.ucsb.edu/courses/. The website
will contain pdfs of the slides presented in lecture. In addition, it will have links to the
weekly quizzes, past-year exams and other information that will help you study the material
presented in lectures. To access the website, login using your UCSB net id. As long as you
are registered, you will have access.

Holidays: Sep. 6 is a University Holiday and there is no lecture on that day.

Grades
Your grade will largely be determined by your performance on exams. However, there
will also be an opportunity for you to earn points by taking online quizzes.
Please review all of your grades when they are posted. Any concerns that may lead to a
grade change must be broached with administration within 7 calendar days. No grade
changes will be made after 7 days unless extenuating circumstances arise.
Although earning 90% of the total points will guarantee you an A, 80% a B, etc., the
final grade scale is generally adjusted to the average performance of the class and will be
determined by the instructors at the end of the course. The median grade in this class is
typically a “C.”

Online Quizzes
The online quizzes are intended to help you identify key ideas/facts that were
presented in lecture, and, at the same time, give you the opportunity to earn a few extra
points.
The essential features of these quizzes are:
1. There will be 9 quizzes, but each quiz is only available for one week.
2. In order to see the quiz after it closes, you must take it during the time it was originally
offered. For example if you wanted to review quiz 5 right before the final exam, you can do
that if you took the quiz when it was open (see "To Review the Quizzes" below). If you did
not take the quiz, you may not be able to see it after it closes!
3. The maximum number of points you can earn is 10 points for each quiz.
4. You may take the quiz up to 2 times for credit (while it is open) and we will use your
highest score to determine the amount of extra credit you earned.
5. The lowest quiz score will be dropped so everyone can earn a maximum of 80 points.
