Assignment 2: Layered Scenes for 2D Game Design [20%]

BRIEF
In this assignment, you will
be creating two unique layered scenes using original digital graphic
elements as concepts for 2D game backgrounds. These scene compositions each will explore the use
of layers using different design styles and production techniques.

Importantly, these compositions are game backgrounds and not game interface designs! No interface
elements, text, game navigation, power-ups, point counters should be included.

TASK
Produce two scene compositions in different design styles demonstrating a variety of digital graphic
editing techniques. Each composition must be a 2D game design – where a character may move
horizontally or vertically through the scenes. These scenes could be landscapes, cityscapes or
interiors set in imaginary worlds. The designs must be distinct from each other and not thematically
linked.

Scene Composition 1 – Repeated Elements
Game worlds are often constructed using a library of graphic elements that can be easily repeated
and rearranged to form unique levels and scenes. For your first composition:

• Design a set of reusable objects using graphic design elements
• Create a background design in which objects can be placed
• Use smart objects to repeat instances of the objects to construct a scene

Examples: Spelunky (Mossmouth), Night in the Woods (Infinite Fall), Super Meat Boy (Team Meat)

Scene Composition 2 – Silhouettes and Illusion of Depth
2-dimensional scene elements can be given a realistic or stylised appearance through the use of
effects that create an illusion of depth in a scene. For your second composition:

• Create a scene using layers of silhouette-styled scene elements.
• To emphasise the silhouette style, use a monotone or duotone colour scheme only
• Apply effects that create atmosphere and depth-of-field effects in the scene

Examples: Limbo (Playdead), The King's Bird (Graffiti Games), Outland (Housemarque)

DELIVERABLES
Submissions must include the following 3 deliverables:

 A "project" folder containing a PSD file for each scene composition
Each composition must use the dimensions 2000 x 1000 pixels. You can decide whether
each scene is presented in landscape or portrait orientation. Do not flatten the layers in the
PSDs.

 Separate PNG image files for each scene composition
Flattened (single layer) versions of your compositions.

 Creative process documentation as a PDF file
An annotated visual diary showing your creative process, demonstrating how research,
experimentation and understanding of theory contributed to the development of your designs.

Include URLs of all images or web sites you refer to for your research. Your documentation shows
your thinking and experimentation. There are bound to be a few dead ends and restarts in your
process, and you will get marks for explaining them!
