1 REVIEW ARTICLE & PRESENTATION INSTRUCTIONS – ECON6009 • Each student needs to write a written report on a published journal article – as allocated early in the semester. The written document should have a maximum of 1,100 words and should be submitted by 18:00 on the Monday prior to your presentation. Submission needs to happen via the Turnitin assessment dropbox on Canvas. Please indicate title of the article & authors, your name and word count on the front page. There is NO need to include a signed School of Economics cover sheet in the submission. • The written document should include two parts: (1) an overview of key ideas of the article (ca. 800 words). You will be provided with a number of questions to help you construct the “story” of the article. You review article consists of a concise response to each of these questions. These questions will tend to relate to context and motivation, insight into the theoretical framework and the prediction tested (+ relate to material discussed in class), econometric methods, main results, interpretation, conclusion and policy implications; (2) a brief critical appraisal (max. 300 words) consisting of one weakness (limitation) of the paper and one main strength, with an assessment of how convincing are the findings of the paper. Strengths and weaknesses could relate to, for example, the article’s approach, empirical method used, data, interpretation of results, applicability of results in other contexts, policy relevance etc. Provide a reasoned argument in support of your assessment. • Your article should use the questions provided as subtitles. Answers to each question should be clear and succinct. Your answers should provide the reader with key insights into the content of the research article. Your answers can be supported by a diagram or a table with results – but ensure it is discussed in your response. Inclusion of a diagram or table with results that is not discussed is not useful and will be penalized. • Note that typos, grammar errors or not well presented work cannot convey good understanding of the article. Please schedule sufficient time to re-read and correct your writing before submission. That will allow for a better evaluation of your review article. • Please use a font size of 11 or 12, 1.5 line spacing and normal margins (at least 1 inch at top, bottom, left and right). • Your list of references, the title of the research article and questions responded to are not included in the word count. Anything else is included. This is not an easy task, but that is part of the assessment – and it is a useful skill to have in any employment later on. • You should check related research articles in case the paper itself does not provide enough information on existing literature and its contribution. If you refer to ideas or findings from research articles in your report, be sure to use proper referencing methods (see APA 6TH STYLE referencing guide on Canvas or library website). • Students will be evaluated based on the clarity and accuracy of the submitted document. • The review article carries a weight of 12/20, while the presentation covers 8/20 points. • You are strongly advised to read the research papers throughout the semester. Thoroughly reading and understanding all the papers in the last few weeks (when you have plenty of other assignments) is impossible. • If you have questions – please get in touch through Ed Discussion Board or Consultation time. 2 Instructions for Presentation assignment: The goal of the presentation assignment is to convey the main ideas of the article, to get students to think about it, and to create a discussion – teach your classmates about the main insights of the article! The presented papers all link to topics discussed in class and therefore aim to provide further insights into the material. 1. Each group needs to prepare a set of presentation slides (in Powerpoint or pdf format) to provide to the rest of the class. To do so, group members are expected to discuss the content of the article with each other (via Zoom or other software). Around 10 slides is appropriate for a 20 minute presentation. These slides should include: a) An summary of the research article, consisting of the key ideas of the article (the questions your responded to in your Review Article should be helpful for this), b) critical appraisal (including one main strength and at most 3 points of weaknesses - that are motivated/elaborated on in the presentation), and c) a few questions to get students to think about and enhance insights into the key ideas of the article and the limitations. Examples: How does the theoretical framework in the paper compare to the material/models discussed in class? What are the empirical challenges in answering the research question? Which method to the authors use to deal with these challenges, and why? Are the results of policy relevance? Any thoughts about the strengths & weaknesses presented? Etc. Questions specific to the article are strongly preferred. 2. The group then gives a 20 minute presentation in a Zoom meeting during class time, with all students present in the meeting. One student in the group presenting can show the presentation slides by sharing their screen with all participants. The advantage of the Zoom meeting is that the presentation is recorded in one video (rather than separate videos from each student) and instructor/students can ask questions and help emphasize or clarify some elements of the research article. Getting a logical & consistent story line in your slides will be key to getting the presentation to make sense and understandable – as in a normal in-class presentation. The group is also expected to rehearse the presentation ahead of the actual presentation in a Zoom meeting with the group. The first 20 minutes will include your presentation (incl. summary and critical appraisal). It will be followed by further discussion, generally based on the questions prepared by the presenters. Overall, each group should count on a Zoom meeting of about 40 minutes. Note: If this group-based assignment does not work out for your group, please get in touch with me ASAP. Reminder: The research articles are part of the material examinable.
