FIT1050 Web Fundamentals Monash University Information Technology Semester 1, 2021 1 Assignment 2 – Design Mock-up and Report Small Business Website Redesign Create a high-fidelity mock-up image of a proposed website redesign for a local business. Write a short report to document the redesign, providing theory-based justifications for important changes made. Website Redesign Guidelines • Create a high-fidelity mock-up image only - do not code a working webpage. • Redesign the homepage of the website only - the entire homepage, no other pages. • You can do either a desktop or mobile redesign - choose one only. • Choose an appropriate tool to create a redesign mock-up that is of presentable quality. • Any site content and design elements can be altered, with appropriate documented justification. • Unnecessary features can be removed, missing features can be added. • Regardless of local language, your redesign mock-up must be presented in English language. Report Guidelines • The report must be between 500 and 1000 words. • Justify decisions responsible for significant visual design changes that you have made. • Consider reasons for changes made to page layout and navigation menus. • Justify any changes made to the site’s content and other information architecture issues. • You may include reference images and diagrams – these do not contribute to the word count. • Include a separate page for references – this does not contribute to the word count. Marking Criteria (15%) • Implementation of redesign mock-up • Identification and critique of design issues • Consideration of client and target demographic needs • Evidence of research, justification of design decisions • Report structure, formatting, and references In-class Participation Milestones (2% × 2) 1. Attend the week 6 lab session and inform your tutor of the site that you have chosen to redesign. • Refer to the “choosing a local business website” guidelines on the next page 2. Complete peer assessment of 3 redesigns submitted by other students before the end of week 9. If you are unable to attend the lab session for a participation milestone due to an unexpected hardship or other unavoidable circumstance, please contact your tutor to apply for special consideration. Due: Week 8, Friday 8pm • Submit your homepage redesign on Moodle as a JPG image. • Submit your written report on Moodle as a DOCX or PDF file. FIT1050 Web Fundamentals Monash University Information Technology Semester 1, 2021 2 Choosing a local business website The redesign must be for a real local small business with an existing website. Find a site that would benefit from a redesign! If you can immediately find 5 things wrong with the site, it may be a good choice. • Local: The business is located in the city/state/province in which you currently live. • Small: The business must not be a well-known brand. It must operate in one city only. • Existing: The business’ existing website needs to be currently accessible online. If you are having difficulty finding a suitable business site to redesign, try using Google Maps (or other map service) to search for different types of businesses in your local area. Researching your site re-design Your redesign should attempt to solve real problems found in the existing site. • Content that is not useful, inappropriate, or missing • Visual design and branding that does not suit the business or audience • Information architecture problems that make content hard to locate • Usability and technical issues that make the site difficult to use The most important redesign decisions you make should be supported with appropriate reasoning that takes into consideration: • Client business goals • Target demographic preferences and user goals • Research into competing websites • Observation of current website design trends Choosing your design tool Your redesign must be in the form of a high-fidelity mock-up – not a low-fidelity wireframe. Do not code a working webpage. No marks are awarded in this assessment for coding. You do not need to use professional user interface design tools. Choose a tool that you are comfortable working with that will allow you to produce a clear and presentable design with relative ease. Some suggestions: • UI Design software o Canva, Moqups (online design tools) o Figma, Invision Studio (free professional UI design tools) o Adobe XD or Sketch (commercial professional UI design tools) • Image editing software o Draw.io (or other online diagramming tools) o Photopea.com, Paint.net (free graphics editors) o Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator (professional graphics editors) • Office productivity software o Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides (recommended)
