Course Outline

Spring 2021

Content: Fundamentals of modern and future wireless networks such as 5G networks.
Overview of 5G characteristics. Unprecedented spectrum allocations to make wireless
data rates up to 100Gbps possible. Radio channel path loss and shadowing. Statistical
multipath channel models. Digital modulation and detection techniques. Capacity of
MIMO channels based on multiple antennas. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing
(OFDM) for highly efficient multi-user and multi-device access. And much more.

Week 1: A Brief History of Wireless Communications, Channel modelling, RF domain
representation, Baseband representation, Discrete-time baseband representation, Linear
Pulse modulation, Statistical modelling

Week 2: Optimal Detector and Its Performance, Binary phase shift keying (BPSK), Time
Diversity, Diversity gain by rotation in time, Diversity gain through a generalized code
matrix

Week 3-4: Antenna Diversity, Receive-antenna diversity, Transmit-antenna diversity,
Generalized transmit antenna diversity, Diversity of MIMO channel, Frequency
Diversity, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)

Week 5-6: Capacity of AWGN Channel, Capacity of SIMO channel, Capacity of MISO
channel, Capacity of Parallel Channels

Week 7-8: Capacity of Slow Fading Channels, ergodic capacity, Outage capacity,
Receive Diversity, Transmit diversity, Capacity of Fast Fading Channel

Week 9-10: Multiuser Capacity, Uplink AWGN channel, Downlink AWGN channel,
Uplink fading channel, Downlink fading channel, MIMO Capacity, MIMO Receiver,
MIMO Multi-user Systems
