CS6115 Assignment Overview: 1. Take an existing website, analyse its usability and accessibility, and design an improved version which addresses the issues identified in your analysis. 2. Create a functioning prototype which demonstrates at least one of the improvements you have proposed in your re-design. You should: • Choose an existing website which allows users to perform a task, e.g.: o an eCommerce site o a planning tool o an online calculator o an interactive guide o a social media or similar site that allows uploading/sorting/formatting of media, etc. ... but NOT a site that merely presents information • Assess the usability and accessibility of the site • Develop an improved design • Build a functioning prototype which demonstrates at least one of the improvements you have proposed in your re-design. In your assessment of the existing website, you should consider issues such as: • Who the site is aimed at, and how successfully you think it appeals to and meets the needs of the target audience • How much demand it places on short-term memory • What interaction styles are used? Are they appropriate? • How easy is it navigate around the page and find information/features? • Is the site easy to learn to use, and once learned, to remember? • Are all the interaction widgets clearly labelled? Are they appropriate for their purposes? • How accessible is the site? Could it be used by someone who is (e.g.) blind? • How good is the site in terms of: o consistency o tolerance of errors o feedback and visibility o etc. The deliverables will be: • A written report, of around 2000 words, in PDF format, containing: o your assessment of the original site's usability, accessibility, etc. o a description of your proposed re-design o an explanation of how your re-design addresses the issues identified in your assessment • The functioning prototype. Marks will be awarded for the following: • Inclusion of all the required elements, as specified above. o Do not include features in the mock-up that are not relevant to your re-design (such as splash screens, audio, video, etc.) - they will not attract extra marks and may LOSE you marks • The prototype should: o be written using Dynamic HTML (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and, where appropriate, JavaScript libraries (such as JQuery). o should function correctly on commonly-used browsers (such as Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer/Edge) o be well designed, both with regard to coding and appearance. The assignment should be submitted not later than 5pm Friday 23rd April. Submission will be via Canvas. A link with submission instructions will be activated a few days before the submission is due.
