Assignment 1: Modelling a 3D Spaceship [20%]

BRIEF
This assessment requires you to design and create an original spaceship in 3D. Throughout the
course of the assessment you will be required to: research different vehicles in order to craft an
appropriate design, model it in 3D, apply basic materials, import your model into a pre-supplied Unity
scene, and produce a final working Build for presentation.

You will present your spaceship in a supplied Unity scene with an orbiting camera with your materials
and mesh illustrating your chosen design in the best possible light.

You are also required to document your process throughout the entirety of the assessment and
include said documentation in your assignment submission. This documentation may take the form of
a digital visual diary and must include clear references and evidence of research.

SPACESHIP DESIGN
It is a requirement of this assessment that you design a new Spaceship based on your research. It’s
also important that you choose a design that is not too difficult, or not difficult enough to pose a
meaningful modelling challenge. Consequently, it is a requirement of this assessment that your
tutor approves your chosen design before you commence modelling it.

You should have your suggested design completed for approval by no later than week 3.

Consider the type of spaceship you want to create; is it a transport, fighter, or science vessel? This
attention to detail will usually make for better assessments. Simple designs with little visual interest or
designs that are not original ideas are unlikely to be approved. You cannot copy a design from an
existing Intellectual Property – this includes games, television/movies, or other visual media.

DELIVERABLES
Submissions for this assignment must contain the following (three items):

(a) A Maya project folder with scene files
This should contain at least three progressively saved scene files showing the progression of
your work

(b) A Unity 3D Windows Build
Importing your design into the Unity scene provided and exporting your scene as an
interactive build: note, the build is not the Unity project file (you don’t need to submit this)

(c) Documentation as a PDF document
Your documentation must contain research, references, screenshots, analysis, and
meaningful descriptions of your technical decision-making process with the aim of illustrating
your working process for this assignment. Further information in what your documentation
should contain will be provided by your tutor and available on Moodle.

Submission is via Moodle. ALL submitted items must be named in a clear and logical way and
compressed into a single .zip file, which should be named with the assessment number, and your
name.

The maximum total file-size for this submission is 100MB.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Your submission will be graded on the following broad categories:
 3D modelling procedure and geometry [45%]

 Modelling accuracy & interpretation
 Clean and Efficient Geometry
 Use of modelling tools & techniques

 Presentation of your scene [20%]

 Consideration of material colour/texture/glossiness
 Visual impact of your spaceship in your final Unity Build
 Appropriate use & manipulation of 3D materials

 Written and Visual documentation [35%]

 Discussion of inspiration, research, design, and planning
 Coverage of 3D process (including modelling, materials, lighting, and Unity)
 Use of images/screenshots and other visual resources to illustrate workflow
 Explanation and reflection of decision-making process


LATE PENALTIES
Any submission received after the due date without a prior arranged extension will receive a 10%
reduction to their available mark per day late, for a maximum of seven days. Submissions received
more than 7 days after the due date without a prior arranged extension will receive a mark of 0 and no
feedback will be provided.
