CSE 5243 – Introduction to Data Mining Homework 3 Objective: In this lab, you will use the results of the Classification work you did for Homework 2. You will create a report suitable for presentation to your company’s stakeholders. The objectives of this assignment are: 1. Understand how to communicate data mining results in a concise way. 2. Understand how to communicate data mining results to stakeholders who do not have data mining expertise. 3. Understand how to support stakeholders’ needs to make decisions and take action. Problem Statement: As in homework 2 you work at SmartBike. The company wants to implement your classifier to bikes immediately. The president of the SmartBike has asked you to attend next Board of Directors. The SmartBike president would like you attend the upcoming Board of Directors meeting. She has asked you to present your findings to her and to the BOD, to help them decide whether to go forward with the planned classifier, and/or to adjust or abandon the approach. Your goal is to support the BOD in making a decision. Deliverables: You will submit a PowerPoint presentation report (in .PDF format). The main body of the report may contain no more than 15 slides (including the cover page). The report must cover, at a minimum: 1. Description of the original request (some BOD members may not be aware of the original request). 2. Description of the dataset. 3. Steps you took to analyze the data and build/evaluate the classifier(s). You may thereafter limit your discussion to the one classifier you chose. Consider - What did the end-to-end pipeline will look like, from data gathering to data analysis to the output? 4. Results of your analyses. a. Evaluation of the usefulness/appropriateness of the data for this problem. b. Evaluation of the classifier for this problem. 5. Your recommendation for the company to move forward (or not) with the current approach. Consider – How might SmartBike evaluate their methods in production? 6. Discussion of possible next steps that it might make sense to take. a. Consider changes to data, methods, etc. 7. Conclusion / thank you. How you group this information on slides is up to you. Grading Criteria: 1. Readability and organization of your report (30%) - Is it concise and well organized? Does the presentation flow in a logical manner? Are the graphics readable? 2. Usefulness of your report (50%) – Does your report meet the needs of your business stakeholders? Does each slide provide value? Do the text and graphics support the purpose of each slide, and the narrative overall? Do you anticipate and address questions they might have? Will it help them make a decision? 3. Tone of your report (10%) – Is your report factual and unbiased? Are all opinions and recommendations labeled as such? 4. Reflections (10%) – Did you document your overall insights? Guidance: 1. This must be a concise report. While you will not be presenting it, you should assume you could present it in 20-30 minutes. Assume you will be “speaking to” the slides, so they should not contain lots of text. However, the key points must be visible on the slides. Graphics are generally preferred to long text streams. Do not simply copy/paste the text from your Homework 2 submission. Consider your audience! 2. The audience will be made up of intelligent people who do not have a deep technical background in data mining or classification. They will be “results-focused”, and not want to see lots of details unless the details are truly relevant. You may put details in appendices, if necessary. 3. Consider searching the Web for examples of Data Mining / Classification slides. Look for “visualization” topics, etc. The “ch_data_exploration.pptx” presentation in our Carmen Files folder may help as well. You MUST include a References slide in the Appendix that lists all sources you used “non-trivially”. 4. This homework is based on Homework 2, and you may or may not have gotten the classification results you hoped to get. Either way you will do presentation based on that. The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to communicate your results to general audience. What to Submit? You will submit the report in .PDF format on carmen. Do not zip or compress it.
