The Bartlett School of Construction & Project Management MSc Digital Engineering Management Assignment Brief 2020-21 (Part A) BCPM0089 – Engineering the digital thread across the lifecycle Module Leader: Dr. Abel Maciel Assignment Brief Part A assignment is an individual activity to present a critical assessment that will count for 20% of the final mark. The presentation should address the following: “There is a wide range of new digital technologies being integrated to Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies. On this assignment, you will inspect a VDC BIM project accessed via your browser using a BIM collaborative platform (BIM360). Upon investigation of this project and reviewing its configuration, quality, maturity and effectiveness, you will use this information to present your understanding of the project digital strategy, context and workflow. Present critical assessment of this VDC project to account for any technology implementation concerns related the project, identifying how technologies researched in BCPM0089 can be applied to improve outcomes.” Drawing on your learnings from the module, produce a 4-7 mins video presentation of circa 500 words in response to the case study and digital management best practice. This has to reflect on the opportunities and drawbacks for prospective application of minimum 1 technology of your choice covered in this module in relation to the VDC and how to improve it. You should draw upon the lectures, seminars and guest speakers to produce this presentation and use the feedback you received. You are expected to provide evidence of your understanding of the subject areas covered in the lectures, supported by extensive independent reading with and beyond the suggested reading list. Your presentation has to demonstrate: • A critical reflection of the existing literature; • A soundly argued analysis of the problem; • Your insights into practical issues of particular relevance A professional standard of presentation of your work, vis-à-vis English language, layout, visual language (tables, figures and animations), citations, and referencing style. All sources and references should be acknowledged using the Harvard referencing system in the video footage of the assignment. Assessment Criteria The following criteria will be used for assessment: • Statement of the problem and outline of context – 20 % • Analysis or investigation of the problem – 40 % • Conclusions and recommendations – 20 % • Presentation – 20 % Assessment Support For every weekly asynchronous session, students will be propped to participate in quizzes embedded in the recorded lectures. Theses series of formative assessments will culminate into a wiki abstract writing activity. The short wiki abstract will be on a module topic of their choice. This formative assessment will prompt students to start to consider what topic to explore in 1 L1: Subject-specific knowledge; L2: Critical academic and research skills; L3: Practical and transferrable skills relation to the Part A assignment. The wiki abstract briefing will happen in Session 5 (Week 22 - 2 January 2021) and will be submitted on Session 9 (Week 24 - 9 February 2021). All students will be asked to present and discuss a short outline of their Part A assignments during Session 15 (Week 28 - 9 March 2021) of the module. This will be followed by discussion on Part B submission and paper development by Session 17 (Week 29 - 16 March 2021). These presentations should be short (approx. 2 mins) and verbal only rather than using visuals aids such as PowerPoint slides. Session 19 of the module (the subsequent synchronous session - 23 march 2021) will provide an opportunity to gain feedback on these presentations and raise questions about the assignments. Any other questions about the assignment should be asked ideally at the end of lectures or via the BCPM0089 “Question and Answer Forum” on Moodle. Only one submission per student will be accepted. Draft versions will not be assessed before the final submission. The Module Leader will endeavour to respond on Moodle to student queries within 24 hours of them being raised. Students should check their course book and the Moodle Forum and information given during the module thoroughly before raising queries via Moodle.
