THF 2021 CW2 Marking Criteria

For this assignment, you will critique a pair of visualisations and provide informed steps for their improvement.

Find two non-interactive visualisations (on the internet, newspapers, scientific papers, video, own work, etc..).
This set of visualisations has to satisfy the following criteria: (1) each visualisation is a single visual
representation, i.e., a single chart. Do not use more complex compositions such as infographics, posters, etc.
(2) each visualisation is of a different visualisation type (e.g., map, barchart, scatterplot, node-link diagram).
You have to name the source of the visualisation, ideally with a link. The visualization needs to be included in
your upload.

Problems (50%): You need to mention two flaws per visualisation (200-300 words for each). These flaws
should not be trivial, for example not truncated axes or rainbow colour schemes. Make sure to not repeat flaws
across visualizations (four flaws in total). You should explain each flaw clearly and succinctly, and correctly
use concepts from the lectures in doing so. You should also outline the misinterpretations that can result from
each flaw. Tip: search for many visualizations and chose the "best" ones for this assignment.

Solutions (40%): You should describe possible solutions to these flaws clearly, and explain why it will fix both
flaws using concepts and methods discussed in the literature (200-300 words per visualization). You can
describe one solution for each flaw or one solution that solves both flaws. You can redesign the entire
visualization as long as the information and intended message is the same. Make sure not to introduce new
flaws. Including a sketch that shows your solution is bonus. The sketch can be hand drawn and does not have
to be perfect. It should aim to illustrate your idea and show it works for the given data/information. Do not try to
re-visualize all the data present in the original visualization.

Writing (10%): Do not write more than the word limit (300 words for each problem/solution description per
visualization, excluding: titles, references, text in visualizations and sketches). You should use at least three
references, correctly formatted using APA, ACM SigCHI, or Harvard style. At least two of these references
should come from the scientific literature or text books (include page numbers where possible). You can use
references mentioned in the end of the lecture slides as well as references and URLs you found online. Your
writing should be clear and understandable.

Patch writing will be penalised by a deduction of five points. If patch writing is too severe, or there is further
evidence of plagiarism, you will be reported to the School Academic Misconduct Officer. If you want to avoid
patch writing or plagiarism, follow one simple rule:

Always summarise relevant findings from your sources from memory, without looking at the source, unless you
want to insert a direct quote, for which you need to use quotation marks. Repeat this cycle (look at source –
put source away - summarise from memory), until the summary you have written from your own memory
seems accurate to you.

Organization
- Upload: Single PDF, including all material (visualizations, text, eventual sketches, etc.). There is no
template.
- Grade: Marked using common marking scheme
- Late Submissions: yes, butwith penalties, see ITO policy.
- Extensions: Central University Process.
- To be found on: Blackboard LEARN, Assessment -> Assignment Submission -> CW2

Examples of trivial problems:
- Truncated axes
- Rainbow colormap (other color issues are OK)
- Values clearly not aligned with, e.g., bar height.
- Values clear not adding up to 100% in pie charts
- Legend missing
- Title missing
- Content pixelated
- Missing axis labels and scales
- What is the chart showing
- 3D charts

Marking Rubrics

Students go down 2 rubrics in "Writing" when over word limit (300 words for each problem/solution description
per visualization, excluding: titles, references, text in visualizations and sketches).

Rubric Grade Student explanation
Problems A2
(85)
Excellent work that shows high levels of critical thinking
and engagement beyond course
A3
(75)
Both flaws are correct, all concepts used correctly, only
very minor weaknesses if any
B (65) Both flaws are non-trivial, explanation is correct with
minor weaknesses, misinterpretation potential correct
with minor weaknesses
C (55) Two flaws identified, but one of them is trivial, major
issues with explanation or misinterpretations, incorrect
use of concepts
D (45) Incorrect explanation of flaws, only one flaw mentioned,
misinterpretation not explained
F (0) Not provided,

Rubric Grade Student explanation
Solutions A2
(85)
Novel and innovative solution, good sketch provided
A3
(75)
Good standard solution, well explained with sufficient
detail to judge if flaw is fixed
B (65) Good standard solution with only minor issues, and
good explanation with only minor issues
C (55) Acceptable solution that does not quite fix the flaws
identified; explanation with major issues
D (45) Wrong solution or solution introducing new flaws or very
unclear how flaw is fixed / insufficient explanation
F (0) Missing

- When using circles: values are mapped to parameters other than area.
- Color used inappropriately: e.g.,
- categorical colors used for sequential data
- Sequential colors used for categorical data
- Sequential colors used diverging data
- Diverging colors used for sequential data
- Colors in legend not the same as in vis
- Colors too close
