ASSIGNMENT 1: CRITICAL REVIEW

Your task

In the first workshop you will be assigned a news article relevant to the
development of data-driven and algorithmic technologies. You will be required
to summarise and analyse it with regards to:

● the evidence and sources its key arguments are based on,
● the societal benefits and/or risks it raises around the creation, capture,
management and use of data, and
● alignment with ethical technological design principles.

Value 20% of your total marks for the unit.

Word Limit

1,000 – 1,200 words (excluding references)
Due Date After Workshop 4: 9am Monday 18 January 2021

Submission ● Via Moodle Assignment Submission.
● Turnitin will be used for similarity checking of all submissions.
● Submissions that do not meet the basic citing and referencing requirements
will be returned and given 24 hours for re-submission, with a 10% (2 mark)
deduction.
● Resubmissions that still do not meet the basic citing and referencing
requirements will receive an N grade.

Assessment
Criteria
● Ability to clearly describe in your own words the article's content and
context, and identify the data issues.
● Ability to identify the key arguments and explain the underpinning evidence.
● Ability to critically evaluate the arguments and evidence, using an ethical
technological design framework.
● Critical writing skills including appropriate citation and referencing of your
sources.

The marking rubric is available on the Moodle site for the unit.
Late
Penalties
● 10% (2 mark) deduction per calendar day for up to one week
● Submissions more than 7 calendar days after the due date will receive a
mark of zero (0) and no assessment feedback will be provided.

Your submission should address the following questions:
A. Who has written the article? Where has it been published? What is the
expertise/reputation of the publication venue? When was it published?
B. What is the article about? Summarise the key argument(s) in your own words and identify
key data challenges.
C. What evidence (e.g. academic research, government report, company statement, etc.) is
referred to, described, and/or otherwise used to support the key argument(s)?
D. Where do you agree and where do you disagree with the key arguments? What evidence
supports your views?
E. Which principle(s) of Beard & Longstaff’s Ethical Design Framework are most relevant to
the issues discussed in this article? How does this framework help to evaluate the article’s
key arguments?

CITING AND REFERENCING
You must acknowledge ALL the sources that you use in develop your assignment submission, so
that it is clear what are your ideas and what are the ideas of others. The basic citing and
referencing requirements are:

● all sources appropriately cited and referenced using the APA citation style
(http://guides.lib.monash.edu/content.php?pid=346637&sid=2835402),
● any direct quotes from sources clearly identified as such with the use of quotation marks, a
citation and a reference, and
● no patchwork paraphrasing.

Plagiarism occurs when students fail to acknowledge that the ideas of others are being used.

● other people’s work and/or ideas are paraphrased and presented without a reference;

● phrases and passages are used verbatim without quotation marks and/or without a
reference to the author or a web page;
● lecture notes are reproduced without due acknowledgement.
