Lab Assignment 2

INSTRUCTIONS

This is a take-home assignment. Please solve the problems using R commander. You are
encouraged to work in groups of TWO students. Put your partner’s name on your
submission. ONE SUBMISSION PER GROUP.

Within the Lab Assignment 2 Folder on the course website, you will find one dataset:
HousingData.csv. This dataset contains housing characteristic data for houses in the GTA
(many years ago…when things were affordable):

● Sale price in $1,000s (so 300 means 300,000)
● Number of bedrooms
● Lot size
● Square footage
● Style – Colonial or other (the “Home Alone” house is an example of a colonial
style home)


Question 1

Provide appropriate summaries (summary stats, frequency tables, etc.) for all variables.
Be sure to label your tables and charts!


Question 2

Calculate summary statistics for price for homes that are “colonial”. Calculate summary
statistics for price for homes that are not colonial. What hypotheses can you make from
these results?


Question 3

Given that this data represents a sample of homes from the GTA, construct a 95%
confidence interval for the true GTA sale price mean. Write down the formula you are
using and discuss why you are using that particular formula. Interpret your interval.




Question 4

Suppose the GTA sale price average is $260,000. Is the mean sale price from the
sample different from the GTA average? Test at the 0.01 level. Make sure to state your
null and alternative hypothesis and a concluding sentence.

Question 5

Do colonial style homes demand a premium over other styles? (i.e. do colonial style
homes sell for higher prices than other styles?) Test at the 0.05 level. Make sure to
state your null and alternative hypothesis and a concluding sentence.
