ECON1001 Introductory Microeconomics
Essay Instructions, S2, 2020
1 Introduction
Please read these instructions carefully TWICE: first before starting this task and then again
before submitting your essay.
1.1 Submission instructions
• Due date: Week8, 22 October 2020, 23:59.
• Penalties for late submission apply. See the Unit of Study outline for more info on Special
Consideration.
• Submission is done ONCE:
1. Complete the online Academic Honesty/Plagiarism declaration on Canvas and sub-
mit via Turnitin (plagiarism software) WITHOUT an Individual Assessment Cover.
1.2 Aim of the essay
In this essay we want you to write about economic concepts that apply to your everyday life!
Here is an example of what we mean: In March 2020 my best friend wanted to fly to the United
States. But because of the Covid-19 lockdown, there were hardly any tickets left. The price
shot through the roof. My friend had to pay over 5000 dollars for a one-way ticket! That
situation is described in economic terms as demand is greater than supply. The supply shock
of tickets was brought about by government regulation. That’s why the price shot up.
In this essay you have the opportunity to write about your own story. The essay aims to
help you develop your analytical and professional-writing skills. These two skills are two of the
most important graduate attributes sought after by leading employers. You are expected to
make use of the economic concepts/theories/models that you have learned in class to analyse
your own experiences.
2 Guidelines
1. The essay is limited to a maximum of 400 words. Any essay exceeding the word
limit is subject to penalties. Markers will have the right to stop marking after 410 words.
The word count must be stated at the beginning of the essay. Title, references
and information in tables do not count toward the word limit.
2. Use a font size of 12 and 1.5 line spacing and at least standard margins (1 inch at
top, bottom, left and right).
1
3. Upload the file as Word or PDF. Do not use Pages editor (tablets). Our online software
cannot read it!
4. Be concise - use your words carefully.
5. Choose your own example, don’t copy my example or an example that you found in a
book.
6. Explain your idea to a friend or your parents BEFORE YOU WRITE IT: If they don’t
understand what you talk about then we won’t either.
7. Have two people proof-read your essay before you submit it.
8. Insert a photo of yourself in the situation you describe (if it is a very personal example).
9. Insert a table with data, data matrix and/or a two dimensional diagram to explain your
points.
10. We have covered a lot of ground in class! You can write about any concept covered
until Week 8.
11. Make sure to meet the submission deadline. There are no excuses! Better to submit a
half-baked essay than none!
12. Structure: The main structure of the essay should be:
(a) Title (not counted in word limit)
(b) Body: Question, analysis, evidence and conclusion (counted in word limit)
(c) Figure, picture or table (if applicable, not counted in word limit)
(d) Reference list (if applicable, not counted in word limit)
13. Do not include footnotes or endnotes. When figures/pictures and/or tables are used, they
should be numbered sequentially and referred to in the text as: ”As illustrated in Figure
1....”... or ”Table 1 shows that...”.
3 Marking Guide (total points: 5)
The essay counts for 15% of your total mark for this Unit of Study. We’ll mark the essay along
the following guideline:
• Analysis and content (3 points):
– Can the reader understand what you mean?
– Did you back up all assertions with evidence?
– Did the analysis involve economic models/ideas?
• Originality (1): Did you show a picture to support a true and original story that could
only happen to you?
• Presentation (1): Did you use appropriate, professional language, are diagrams and
tables correctly labelled, is the reference list complete?
2
4 Topic/s
1. Choose an everyday topic that you like and which illustrates a point using an economic
concept.
2. If you decide to discuss something that is on the news or unrelated directly to your own
life, it is important that you show that you are doing a personal reflection.
3. Whenever possible, attach a picture of the anecdote with your submission with a citation
and reference. Note again that this topic requires you to write the essay in first person.
