Assignment 2 — Game Concept Document
Weighting: 5%
Due Time/Date: 11:55pm Friday 30th of August (Week 7)
Aims of the Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to give you experience creating design concept documents for a simple video game. It
addresses the following criteria from the unit handout:
• Students should be ICT professionals with the abilities and skills to:
o design, identify required techniques, and apply knowledge of development principles and technical skills
to develop games
• Students should acquire attitudes needed by an ICT professional to:
o communicate effectively at a professional level
Assignment Requirements
The assignment is to develop a game concept and present that concept via a Game Concept Document. The concept you
come up with will be implemented for the rest of semester and will form the basis of your work for Assignments 4 and 5.
This is an individual assignment.
Report Requirements
The report has the following requirements:
• It must be 2–4 pages in length (1 page maximum for title, concept statement, and overview, 1–3 pages for the
treatment and concept art).
• It needs to be submitted electronically as both a PDF file and a Word (or equivalent) file.
The concept document should address the following areas:
• Overview, including:
o The working title.
o The concept statement.
o Genre or category of game.
o Concept creation process/area (e.g. subtractive design, anti-game, mashup, etc.) and influences.
o Audience and competitive analysis.
• Game treatment and concept art.
Referencing
It is expected that you will need to reference pre-existing games or any images from external sources (e.g. for influences or
concept art). Any suitable referencing style is acceptable for this assignment, but it must at least be consistently and
correctly applied throughout your document. Additionally, all images in your report should be captioned and referred to
somewhere in the text – i.e. they should always support what the text is saying and be relevant.
See here for the University's guide to referencing here: http://www.academicintegrity.utas.edu.au/staff_resources.html.
Assignment Submission
Two files must be submitted before 11:55pm Friday 30th of August (Week 7):
• The report files (PDF and Word/equivalent copies), to be submitted electronically.
• A signed individual assignment coversheet (available from the EICT website:
http://www.utas.edu.au/__data/assets/word_doc/0006/161376/AssignmentCover.doc)
These files should be submitted through MyLO only.
