COMP5349: Cloud Computing Sem. 1/2023

Project: AWS Architecture Solution

Individual Work: 20% 27.04.2023

1 Tasks

You are asked to implement the Capstone project in AWS Academy Cloud Architecting course. Please read carefully the project description and the solution requirements.

You are also asked to produce a video demonstration of your project and write a short report. Details are given below.

1.1 Project Solution

The description of the project is in the Capstone Project page in Module 15 of the AWS Academy Cloud Architecting course, as given in the English language. You need to “deploy a PHP application that meets the system requirements” described in that page.

Note: Ignore the Project deliverables section in the Capstone Project page. The deliv- erables for this assignment are defined in the Submission and Mark Distribution section of this document.

1.2 Video Demonstration

To ensure that your video can be viewed by the marker, you need to record it using Zoom. You will start a Zoom meeting, turn on the camera to show your face, and share your screen showing your AWS console in a Web browser window. You can start recording after you have logged in to the AWS console. Please do not edit the video afterwards since doing this might change the video encoding scheme. The requirements for your video recording are described in detail below.

• You will begin your video with a brief introductory part during which the camera needs to be turned on and there is no screen sharing. Your introductory part should be brief. You need to show photo ID and say your name. It is recommended that you use a university issued student card as your photo ID. However, if you do not have one, you may use another photo ID that shows your name in English. If you are unable to obtain a suitable photo ID, please contact the course TA for assistance.

• In your video, you need to demonstrate the following aspects of your project:

1. Inspect the VPC and subnets created in your deployment, and explain their

purposes and network access permissions.

2. Inspect all security groups and explain their purposes and rules.

3. Show that you have provided an administrator user for the database and the administrative user can update database content.

4. Inspect all running EC2 instances and explain their uses in the project.

5. Show that the website is running on t2.micro EC2 instances and that each of these instances is in a private subnet.

6. Show that you can use SSH to access one of the website’s EC2 instances via the bastion host.

7. Show that you have a created an auto scaling group and a launch template that can automatically start instances in different availability zones (AZs).

8. Show that your auto scaling group is correctly deployed by running a stress test.

UPDATE (1/5/2023): This item has been removed.

• It is important that you provide a comprehensive English explanation for each step of the demonstration in the video.

• The AWS management console must be displayed in English.

• Your IAM user name must always be visible at the top right corner of your AWS

management console throughout the video.

• The voice in your video must be your own.

• You must not use a translator.

• It is recommended that your video be no longer than 10 minutes in length, although slightly longer videos may be permissible.

1.3 Summary Report

Your summary report needs to contain the following sections:

• Solution Summary. In this section, it is expected that you provide a brief overview of the design choices you made to complete the project. Additionally, it must contain an architecture diagram that is consistent with your solution. We recommend using draw.io for producing this diagram.

2

• Cost Estimation and Tracking. As part of the project requirements, you are expected to provide an estimate of the AWS cost at the outset and monitor your expenses throughout the project. This section should feature a cost estimation diagram created using one of the tools specified in the project description. Furthermore, it should in- clude a diagram that outlines the actual cost incurred upon completion of the project. This diagram should itemize the costs associated with each service you utilized. Also, it should include the actual total cost incurred upon completion of the project and an explanation of why it differs from the estimated total cost (if applicable). The docu- mentation of the actual costs may be done immediately after submitting the project on AWS Academy Canvas or after completion of the video demo. Please indicate when these costs are this cost is calculated in this section. UPDATE (1/5/2023): This bullet point has been amended. Deleted text is in red. Added text is in blue.

• Demonstration Plan. To facilitate a more effective review of your video, you are asked to provide a concise demonstration outline in this section. This outline should feature the various sections of your demo and the anticipated duration of each section.

You must write your report in English without using translators. However, you may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to refine the English language presentation (you must acknowledge any AI tool that you use).

2 Submission and Mark Distribution

There are three deliverables:

• The project solution. The submission of the project implementation needs to be made on the AWS Academy Cloud Architecting Course platform. This submission carries a weight of 6 points and is graded using an automated marking script that is similar to those employed in all the labs. You are permitted to make multiple submis- sion attempts and use the feedback to improve your implementation. Even after the deadline, you will continue to have access to the project and the submission button. However, it is advisable to avoid submitting minor revisions after the deadline as doing so may result in late penalties.

• A video demonstration. This submission is worth 8 points. It needs to be submitted to the COMP5349 Canvas AWS Project Video assignment submission page.

• A short report in PDF format. This submission is worth 6 points. It should be submit- ted to the COMP5349 Canvas AWS Project Report assignment submission page.

It is your responsibility to make sure that you submit the correct video and report file. You are advised to allow sufficient time to submit and review your submission before the deadline.
